C.) why monasteries were built
Ans: Both Jains and Buddhist monks travel from place to place throughout the year teaching people. During the rainy season they used to stay in a place. Because at that time it was very difficult for them to travel. For this reason their supporters built temporary shelters for them in gardens, or they live in caves in hilly areas. As the time pasess many monks, nuns and their supporters felt the need for permanent shelter. For this reason monasteries were built. The earliest viharas were made of wood and later on the land on which viharas were built was donated to rich merchants or kings.
