Let’s See –
1.) point out the feature of the two letters in terms of their format common language and tone.
Ans – The letters read like an easy exchange of love and affection between a mother and her educated daughter in these two letters. The structure of the language is dated. Despite having a defensive tone, the daughter uses simple language. Mother uses suggestive language in her speech.
2.) ” It was only your existence inside me that made me laugh on” Why does the daughter say so? What does she mean by laugh on?
Ans – The daughter has been facing hostile and harsh situations at her in-laws place and reminisces about her time spent with her mother. These memories give her encouragement to move on further in life. The word laugh on represents a sarcastic tone that she uses to refer to the fact that her good and old memories are her driving forces now.
3.) Comment on the bond between the mother and her daughter.
Ans – Set in an Indian household even if both the women have a lot to face in their respective lives, they share a common sense of accomplishment of womanhood in their lives and share a dear and affectionate bond. The daughter shares her feelings to her mother , further stressing on the fact that they have an intimate bond.
4.) ’Nobody can ever tell you that you didn’t know how to bring up your daughter !” What does “bring up your daughter” imply here?
Ans – Over here by this phrase the daughter tries to imply her upbringing and the moral and value education that was instilled in her mother. At present all of it is being tested as she has to go though ordeals and injustice at the hands of her in-laws.
5.) Sketch the character of the mother. How far does your mother resemble her?
Ans – The mother is the epitome of calmness, love, affection, and patience for her daughter. She warns her daughter to avoid enraging the male family members and not to get on bad terms with them. She has seen the strange behaviour of the daughter’s father and has been subjected to the same ordeals the daughter is going through. She makes this point in her letter.
My mother somewhat resembles her, as she also stresses on cooperation , peace and the importance of adjusting as much as it is possible.
6.) Why is the daughter filled with a sense of weariness and emptiness? Have you experienced like her?
Ans – After being married and facing unexpected situations at her in-laws house the daughter finds her ambitions and dreams jeopardised. According to her this is not what she had expected her life to be and the sudden changes and the fact that she has to adjust with all of it has made her weary and empty. Fortunately enough I never had to face anything like this.
6.) What did the mother feel after going through her daughter’s letter?
Ans – The mother was glad to receive her daughter’s letter after a long time and she tried to provide a positive outlook of life to her daughter through the letters. she also conveyed that she believed in her daughter and that she can touch great heights in life even if situations seem difficult at the moment
7.) How does the mother analyse the situation ? Do you agree with her analysis and the solution that she suggests ?
Ans – The mother’s scrutinizes the situation with utmost care and even though she understands all of which her daughter is going through at her in-laws house she still asks her daughter to keep patients and not to give up.
I do not totally agree with her view and feel that many a times a woman’s silence is often taken as her weakness and that there is need for her to protest against injustice that happens in the name of tradition and cultures
8.) What picture of the status of women in family is represented in two horizons? Do you find any trace of generation gap in approach to life shown by the mother and her daughter?
Ans – The status of women over here is shown as that of a homemaker who is supposed to be understanding ,adjusting and should be able to bind a family and adjust to the needs of the male members of the house.
the mother very positively tells how the daughter’s father had put her in a difficult spot and she had to cooperate and bear with everything silently and she expects her daughter to show the same kind of patience. the daughter however feels that her ambitions and dreams have been crushed due to the societal pressure of adjusting with her in laws. Where the mother talks about sacrifice for the family the daughter wishes to pursue her ambitions this happens to be an important difference between generations. the new generation does not want to compromise with its future
