Violence against Women Essay writingViolence against Women Essay : Violence against women refers to the physical and mental abuse perpetrated by their spouses and ravishers. The most common forms of violence against women are rape, domestic abuse, sexual assault and murder. The violent acts mostly result from hidden vengeance, dowry issues and forced prostitution. Women belonging to any caste, religion, creed, or race can become victims of violence. The United Nations proclaims the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The global feminist movent in 1970 started to change the status of women in society. However, an estimated 736 million women are subjected to physical, and sexual violence by their partners and non-partners. Of those who are in relationships, one out of four adolescent girls is subjected to sexual violence and rape. 52 countries comprising the Middle East and North Africa reported violence against women, during the lockdown, posed during COVID-19. Domestic violence has mostly accelerated during this period.

Causes of violence against women

  • Poverty and unemployment are major causes of domestic women abuse. The men who are unemployed and poverty-stricken take out their aggression mostly on their wives by hitting and killing them. In families where women are not allowed to enjoy equal rights as men, become the victims of violence. In India, dowry deaths are even popular where the remote regions of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar ranked the top in assaulting women. Alcoholic husbands also tend to murder their wives and this has become an ongoing form of abusive behaviour.
  • Rape is another type of heinous sexual assault involving acts of forceful sexual intercourse. It is one of the most common crimes against women in India. Furthermore,one in six American women has been a victim of rape. There are various instances of rape cases such as the Hyderabad gang rape in 2019, the Greater Noida Rape case in 2016, the Hanskhali rape case and the list goes on.
  • Acid attacks another form of violence against women are also on the surge. West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are the leading states where acid attack violence has taken place. As of 2020, 182 acid attacks have taken place in India most of which are still unreported. The most notable cases of acid attacks cases in India are Sonali Mukherjee in 2003 and Laxima Aggarwal in 2005.
  • Another form of violence against women is psychological violence which includes acts such as shouting, intimidating looks and gruesome gestures and screaming. These are perpetrated either by the boyfriends or the spouses and their family members.

Conclusion

India, despite making significant progress, has still not been able to do away with the heinous crimes against women. Sadly, the judicial system in India takes a long term to serve justice to the rape victims and their families. For instance, the victim of the Nirbahaya case got justice after seven years. It is even noticed that women having poor parental backgrounds who file complaints against their affluent-class husbands do not get justice. Millions of women across the world are the worst sufferers of violence and only a few cases come into the limelight, whereas, most of them go unreported.
