Unlike Decimal

Unlike Decimal

The decimal numbers or decimals or the set of decimals which are having different number of decimal places are the unlike decimals.

That means if in a set of decimals, all the decimals are having different number of digits on the right side of decimal point then that set of numbers is called as unlike decimals.

NOTE:

  • The places of the digits after the decimal point are called as decimal places.
  • And we can write the whole number in the form of decimal number also.
  • For example: 68 is a whole number and we can write as 68.00 in the form of decimal number. Because here if we add number of zeros after decimal point the value of whole number 68 does not changes.

Now, we see in detail what are the unlike decimals and how unlike decimals are converted into like decimals also.

Let us consider the decimals as 5, 2.3, 4.56, 5.678, 8.1234, etc.

Now,

  • 5 has no decimal place.
  • 3 has only one decimal place.
  • 56 has two decimal places.
  • 678 has three decimal places.
  • 1234 has four decimal places.

Thus, the above all decimals are having the different number of decimal places. Hence these are called as unlike decimals.

Conversion of unlike decimals into like decimals:

But, it is interesting that we can also convert the unlike decimals into like decimals for our sec of convenience.

For the conversion of unlike decimals into like decimals we have to write the required number of zeros after the last digit in decimal part. Because if we have written any number of zeros after last digit of decimal part then there will be no change in the value of that number.

For example:

  • 23 can be written as 44.2300 also and both are having the same meaning.
  • 4.5 can also be written as 4.5000 also and both are having the same meaning.

  • Let us consider the same decimals as 5, 2.3, 4.56, 5.678, 8.1234, etc. which are unlike decimals.

To convert them into like decimals first we write them in the increasing order of number of decimal places as below.

  • 5 → zero decimal place

2.3 → one decimal place

4.56 → two decimal places

5.678 → three decimal places

8.1234 → four decimal places

Now we first we see that which number is the largest number in decimal places of above numbers.

  • Now, the set of decimals 5.0000, 2.3000, 4.5600, 5.6780 and 8.1234 are having the equal number of decimal places. Hence, the set of decimals is called as like decimals.

In this way, we can convert the unlike decimals into like decimals for our easier calculations.
