The Midnight Visitor Extra Questions and Answers English Footprints without Feet Chapter 3
Summary
The midnight visitor, by Robert Arthur is a thrilling story, in which the author aims to deliver, that:
- Appearances can be rather deceptive.
- Life can be quite unpredictable.
- Critical situations require focus and a presence of mind.
The story begins with the introduction of Ausable, the ‘not so cliché’ secret agent. He is irreconcilable from what his companion for the evening, Fowler, a young writer, has ever heard or read about secret agents. Chubby Ausable didn’t contemplate the descriptions and expectations of the writer, who was quite displeased with the agent as well as the boring evening he had to spend with him.
Right before entering Ausable’s small hotel room on the sixth and top floor, the agent senses Fowler’s disillusion and chuckled as he stated that how the writer must have had expected a spy who has messages slipped into his hand by dark-eyed beauties; dealing in espionage & danger while envisioning- mysterious figures in the night, the crack of pistols, drugs in the wine.
But as they enter the room, he reassures Fowler that he’ll soon show him a very important report which can dramatically change the course of history. Ausable then switched the lights on, and the sight in front of them startled Fowler, who was thrilled to see a man, standing halfway across the room with a small automatic pistol, and he soon learned that the man’s name was Max who also happened to be a secret agent. Max threatened Ausable to hand over the important report on missiles to him as he’d protect it better.
Ausable hastily changed the subject by fumingly talking about suing the management as this was the second time this month that someone had broken into his room through the balcony. Max quickly countered, by letting Ausable know about using a pass-key, and mentioning that the way through the balcony would have saved him much trouble.
They sat down to wait for the report, when all of a sudden there was a knock at the door. Max was nervous and started to panic. Ausable just smiled and told Max that it’s the police, who frequently checked up on him, as he was to carry such crucial documents.
Hearing this, Max got really scared, he commanded Ausable to send them away, while he pointed his gun towards the other two men in the room, he said he would wait in the balcony until the police left. Max warned that he would shoot them if they didn’t listen to him. Saying so, he jumped out of the window and suddenly there was a loud scream.
The door unlocked to reveal a waiter, who came in with a bottle and two glasses, unaware of the mishappenings, he kept the tray and left. Fowler was surprised to see all this and asked Ausable about the police. To which, Ausable said that he lied about the police for intimidating Max. Fowler again asked that Max must be waiting in the balcony, to which Ausable replied, there was no balcony attached to his window and that Max had fallen to death unknowingly. He successfully outwitted Max and saved himself and his friend, Fowler from a fatal situation.

Long Answer Type Questions
1.) The chapter “The Midnight Visitor” clearly sends out one message. Try to decipher that message and explain.
Ans: The chapter “The Midnight Visitor” tries to explain that “appearances can be rather deceptive”. We all read how Ausable did not fit the whole “cliche spy” image that movies and novels, especially James Bond and “Vyomkesh Bakshi” have rooted in our minds. Rather, Ausable was a fat, short guy with a weird American accent, who cracked jokes with the writer, Fowler and had a great sense of humor. He also had a sharp presence of mind. It took him seconds to recover from the surprised visit of Max and came up with the presence of a balcony. And when there was a knock on the door, Ausable made sure to use this opportunity. He came up with another lie about the visit of the police to check on him.
On the other side, we have Max, who we may have considered to be one “cliche spy” man, as he entered Ausable’s room in search of those important reports on the missile. As a spy, he should have had complete knowledge about the room and building he was about to enter and on the proceedings of his opponent. But when lied about the balcony and the police, he panicked and readily believed the story.
It was Ausable’s quick presence of mind that saved his and Fowler’s life and kept the reports on the missiles safe. We need to learn that appearances do not tell everything about a person, rather their presence of mind and attitude towards problems do.
2.) What convinced Max that there was a balcony at the other end of the window?
Ans. Ausable confident and calm attitude in the fatal situation where he stated things as a matter of fact saved his and Fowler’s life. Initially on seeing Max, he complained about the presence of balcony which made it possible for people to enter his room quite conveniently. After this, Ausable went on to explain how previously a person had entered his room through the balcony and Ausable complained to the management to get the way to the balcony blocked. Ausable fussed in real how his apartment was not being fixed and it was such a big problem for him.
Ausable’s bluffing did not seem like any sort of plot and he said things in such a casual way that made Max believe that there was a balcony. He was so convinced that he readily jumped out of the window to hide from the police.
