Tenses for Class 6 English Grammar:
- * The tense of a verb shows the time of an event, or action taking place.
- * Tense are basically of 3 types – (i) Past tense (ii) Present tense (iii) Future tense
(I) Past Tense –
A verb that refers to the Past time, or the time that has already passed is called past tense.
For eg – I wrote a letter
I ate an apple
We went to the school
In the sentences above, the verb wrote, ate, went refers to the time which has already passed.
(II) Present Tense –
A verb that refers to the present time, or the time that is passing is called present Tense.
For eg – I write this everyday
My watch keeps good time
The school bells rings in time.
In the above sentences, the verb write, keeps, rings refers to the time that is passing, i.e. present Tense.
(III) Future tense –
The verb that refers to the time that is yet to come or the future is called future tense.
For eg – I shall go to school
We will bring some mangoes
The gate will open on 10:00
The verb shall go, will bring, will open refers to the time that is yet to come i.e. future tense.
* The 3 tenses are also further divided
(I) Past tense
Past tense has further divisions such as
simple past , past continuous tense , past perfect tense , past perfect continuous tense.
* Past continuous tense –
The past continuous tense refers to an action going on at some past in the past.
For eg – (1) we were watching the movie
(2) The was going to the church
* The verb in the above sentences were watching, was going, refers to an action continuing in the past.
* Was in used with I, He, She, it.
Eg – I was eating
He was eating
She was eating
It was eating
* ‘Were’ is used, you, we, they.
Eg – you were eating.
We were eating
They were eating
‘Was not’
* Is the same with negative verbs
* ‘was not’ with I, he, she, it
Eg – I was not eating.
He was not eating
She was not eating
It was not eating
* Were not with negative verbs – you, we, they
Eg – you were not eating
We were not eating
They were not eating
**Past perfect tense –
The past perfect tense describes an action completed before a certain moment in the past.
* I had seen the movie 5 years back.
* The past perfect tense is mainly used in a situation in which it is necessary to show which action happened earlier than the other.
** For eg – when I reached the hall, the movie had started
** I had finished my work, when Hari came. In this sentences, the action which had started first or completed first, past perfect is used.
* In sentence 1, the movie had already started before I reached the hall.
** Past perfect continuous tense –
This tense is used for an action that began before a certain point in the past & was continued up to that time. For eg –
(i) All that time, he had been studying a novel for an hour.
(ii) When I came to the school, Hari had already been studying for 2 hours.
(II) The present Tense
* The present Tense is further divided into present continuous, present perfect & present perfect continuous tense.
* Present continuous Tense –
The present continuous tense refers to the activity that has started in the present time & is still continuing.
For eg – (i) she is sleeping
(ii) The girls are making flower garlands
In the above sentences ‘is sleeping, are making are present continuous tense, ‘is sleeping’ means the action began in the present time & is still continuing.
* Present perfect Tense –
The present perfect tense indicates activities that are accomplished or completed in the immediate past.
For eg – I have just come out.
(ii) It has just started to rain.
* In the above sentences the activities have just completed in the immediate past.
* Present perfect is also used with past actions in which definite time is not mentioned
For eg – I have been to Kerala
Have you eaten a dragon fruit?
* Present perfect
Present perfect is also used to demote action beginning at some time in the past & is still continuing in the present time. (Since, for is used)
For eg – (i) we have known each other for a long time
(ii) He has been out since last week
** Present perfect continuous –
This tense is used for an action which began at some time in the past & is still continuing.
For eg – (i) I have been writing for 2 hours
(2) They have been watching this movie for shows.
(III) The future tense
The future tense is further divided into future continuous, future perfect & future perfect continuous tense.
* This tense is also used in actions in future that are already planned or are expected to happen in the course of time.
For eg – (i) We will be meeting next week.
(ii) I shall be staying here till next month.
** Future perfect tense –
This tense is used with actions that will be completed by a certain future time.
For eg – (i) I shall have finished my work by then
(ii) The train will have left the station before you go.
** Future perfect continuous –
This tense is used with actions that will be in progress over a period of time that will end in the future.
For eg – (i) By next week, we shall have been living here for a month
(ii) I have been studying this novel for a month.
* This tense is not very commonly used.
