Ans: – Air pollution lead to water pollution. One of the main cause which is known as acid rain, pollution from factories and cars, industries etc. releases some dangerous gases like nitrogen oxide, sulphuric oxide which spread in the air. When rain coming, these gases mix with the rain water which results known as acid rains. Then this acidic rain water goes into the water besides and making then polluted.
Use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture pollutes not only air but also water.
Acid rain also damages building historical monuments plants and animals and in this way air pollution lead to water pollution.
(2) What steps can be taken up to control air pollution and water pollution.
Ans: – Air pollution cannot be totally eliminated. It can be controlled some of this process for controlling air pollution are –
(1) Tall chimneys should be installed in all factories to reduce air pollution at the ground level
(2) Better designed fuel burning equipment should be used in homes and industries so that fuel is burnt completely.
(2) Reduce vehicular emissions by using non polluting fuels like CNG.
(3) Improve the quality of fuel in automobiles and use catalytic converters in them.
(5) Plants and grow more and more trees in yout surroundings which reduces air pollution.
(6) All motor vehicles should be maintained properly so that they comply with pollution norms.
Prevention of water pollution:
(1) Toxic industrial wastes should be treated chemically to neutralize the harmful substances present in it before discharging into rivers and lakes.
(2) The sewage should not be dumped in to the rivers directly. It should first be treated at the sewage treatment.
(3) The use of excessive fertilizers and pesticides should be avoided.
(4) The use of synthetic detergent should be minimized or biodegradable detergents should be used.
(5) Dead bodies of human beings and animals should not be thrown in to rivers.
(6) The excreta and other garbage should be treated in a biogas plant to get fuel as well as manure.
(7) There should be general awareness among the masses regardings the harmful effects of water pollution and the way of prevention. Waste paper, plastics, waste food and vegetables should not be thrown in to open drains.
(7) Trees and shrubs should be planted along the banks of the rivers.
(3) Why does the increased level of nutrients in the water affect the survival of aquatic organisms?
Ans: – Phosphates and nitrates – chemical fertilizers from agriculture run-off due to rain and industrial waste enter into water through sewage and pollute the water. It helps algae to bloom, weeds to grow and bacteria to spread. As a result water turns green and cloudy and smell bad. Decomposing plants use up the oxygen in water, disrupting aquatic life. Thus this enrichment of water by nutrients leading to excessive plant growth and depletion of oxygen is known as ‘Euthrophication’. This effects aquatic life badly.

Ans: – Roadside plant does not get proper water. There is no sufficient amount of water presents in the soil for the growth of plants.
