( 3 ) Why is the actual distance on the ground reduced on the map?

It is due to the fact that the actual coverage of the distance on the ground is greater when compared to a piece of paper. So, it is unfeasible to be accurate in the distance on the piece of paper. Therefore, this is the only relevant way of decreasing the distance on the map. As maps are not so big , for this reason it is difficult to show the actual distance on the map. Owing to this reason, the actual distance on the ground is reduced on the map. Thus , the primary function of the scale is to display the actual distance on the ground by decreasing it on a map.

( 4 ) Explain the need of symbols in preparing maps.

As maps are not so big, for this reason it is not possible to draw the pictures of the things that are actually shown on them. As for example, it is difficult to draw the actual school bus because it will use excessive space on the map. For this reason , symbol is always used for the purpose of displaying things on a map. Owing to this fact, dots and circles are used in order to display villages and towns in the district map. So, symbols are prepared by map makers in such a manner that is pertinent to their requirements. Some common symbols are also used, which are known by the term of ‘Conventional Symbols’ . Therefore, these are the several points which clearly depicts the need of symbols in preparing maps.

( 5 ) Draw the symbols representing different water bodies, places of worship and public offices on a drawing sheet and present it in the class.

Symbol of Lake :

Explanation :

Lake –  Lake refers to a water body that is completely enclosed by land . There are some lakes which are not so big, and these small lakes are known by the term of ponds. Seas on the other hand refers to those lakes that are quite vast. Lakes not only plays an important role in regulating the flow of a river but it is also of immense importance to the individual beings.

Symbol of temple :

Explanation:

Temple –Temple refers to those buildings that are primarily designed for purpose of worshipping deities. Prayer and sacrifice are some of the most relevant examples of religious rituals and practices.

Symbol of church :

Church–Church refers to a building that is mainly reserved for Christian worship. It is also known as the house of God. The primary role of the church is to be embedded in every aspect of the believer’s life.

Symbol of masjid :

Masjid –  Masjid is also known as mosque, it mainly refers to a place that is reserved for Muslim worship. When the Muslim rules of prayer are followed in any act of worship then it leads to the creation of masjid , it is not necessary that it has to occur in any specific place or building.

Symbol of post office :

Post office –  Post office refers to those public offices whose main responsibility is to handle the transmission of mail . In other words, it contributes in rendering mail services.

( 7 ) What are the important features of a map ?

Scales, symbols and grids are for instance, some of the relevant features of a map. Every map depicts  the scale representation of actuality. Therefore , the primary function of the scale is to display the actual distance on the ground by decreasing it on a map. In short, it helps in indicating the relation between the distance on the map and the real distance on the ground. Thus, a verbal scale or a graphic scale can used in order to express this connection or interrelation . As maps are not so big, for this reason it is not possible to draw the pictures of the things that are actually shown on them.For this reason , symbol is always used for the purpose of displaying things on a map.A grid plays an important role in identifying the locations on a map.Therefore, these are the important features on a map that helps us in enhancing our understanding of the primary elements of maps. So, these are the several points that clearly portrays the significant features of a map.

( 8 ) Read the paragraph titled ‘ Symbols’ on page 6 and comment on it.

The primary function of a map symbol,which is also known by the term of  graphical deviceis used to display the visual representation of the actuality or the actual world circumstanceson a map. It functions in a similar manner just like other framework of symbols. Continuous text, point markers and line regions are also included in map symbols and these can go through the process of visual modification in accordance with their color, shape , size and graphical patterns.
