I.) Answer the following questions.

1.) What is the belief at Pashupathinath temple about the end of Kaliyuga?

Answer: There is a small shrine half protrudes from the stone platform on the river bank of holy Bagmati. It is believed that when it emerges fully, the goddess inside will escape, and the evil period of the Kaliyug will end on earth.

2.) Why couldn’t the narrator tear himself away from the square?

Answer: In a corner of the square, the narrator saw a flute seller. In his hand was a pole with an attachment at the top from which fifty or sixty bansuris protrude in all directions. The flute seller played for a few minutes and the sound rises clearly above the noise of the traffic and the hawkers’ cries. The playing of the flute had a meditative effect on the narrator’s mind. For him, flute music always did the magic. It was at once the most universal and most particular of sounds.

3.) Compare and contrast the atmosphere in and around Baudhnath shrine with Pashupathinath temple.

Answer: At Pashupathinath temple, priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, cows, monkeys, pigeons and dogs roam through the grounds. At the main gate there is a party of saffron-clad Westerners struggle for permission to enter. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple. There is jumping of monkeys on Shivalinga. The monkeys run screaming around the temples and down to the river, the holy Bagmati that flows below. A corpse is being cremated on its banks; washerwomen are at their work and children bathe. From a balcony a basket of flowers and leaves, old offerings now wilted, is dropped into the river. A small shrine half protrudes from the stone platform on the river bank. When it emerges fully, the goddess inside will escape, and the evil period of the Kaliyug will end on earth. At Baudhnath temple, the situation is quite contrast. There is quietness. Its immense white dome is ringed by a road. Small shops stand on its outer edge; many of these are owned by Tibetan immigrants. There is no crowd at all.

4.) Do you want to visit the places like Kathmandu? Why?

Answer: Yes, I would love to visit places like Kathmandu. The narrator has described the place very beautifully. There are many spiritual places where I would love go. And also I would love to explore the culture.
