I) Answer the following questions.
1) The doctor heard a sound coming from above three times. What was it?
Answer: The doctor heard a sound coming from above the above three times which was actually of a snake but the doctor thought it was of rats.
2) Why did the doctor sit like a stone?
Answer: A snake slide along the doctor’s shoulder and coiled around his left arm above the elbow. Its hood was spread out and its head was hardly three or four inches from his face and this made him sit like a stone.
3) What made the doctor forget his fears and have a sense of relief?
Answer: The snake slipped from the doctor’s hand and move towards the mirror. May be it wanted to enjoy its beauty in the mirror. It was then the doctor ran out of the room.
4) Did the snake admire its beauty? Yes or no? Pick the lines from the passage in support of your answer.
Answer: The snake seemed to enjoy its beauty. It looked into the mirror. Perhaps it wanted to enjoy its reflection at closer quarters- this line from the passage tells us that it might be interested in admiring its beauty.
5) Why did the doctor want to marry a doctor? What kind of woman doctor would he like to marry?
Answer: The doctor’s income was meager. He wanted to marry a woman doctor who had plenty of money and a good medical practice. And with that he wanted his wife to be fat because if he made some silly mistake and needed to run away, she should not be able to run after me and catch him.
6) In those days, I was a great admirer of beauty. Do you think looks are more important than skills and behavior? Why?
Answer: It is well known that beauty is only skin deep. I think it is someone’s character and their attitude that makes them beautiful. Physical beauty fades with time but what stays forever is their skills and behavior. One remembers person’s behavior and nature more than their looks.
7) What did the doctor think about the snake when it looked into the mirror?
Answer: The doctor thought that the snake was enjoying and admiring its beauty. He thought that the snake was trying to make an important decision about growing a moustache or using eye shadow and mascara or wearing a vermilion spot on its forehead.
8) Why did the doctor run to his friend’s house? Did the snake want to harm the doctor? Why or why not?
Answer: The doctor was scared of the snake and this is why he ran to his friend’s house. No the snake didn’t harm the doctor it just slipped from his arm and sat in front of the mirror. More than hurting the doctor, it was interested to look at itself in the mirror.

A young doctor lived in a village. The doctor told his friends an interesting story about himself and a cobra. It was a hot summer night. when he opened the door, he heard a sound which was well known to him. He and rats shared the same room. There was no electricity in the house, so he took out a box of matches and lit a kerosene lamp. He took off his clothes and lay down but he could not sleep. He got up from the bed and started reading a story-book. Near the table there was a mirror, which tempted him to look into at himself. He was unmarried so he was particular about his handsomeness. He wanted to marry a woman doctor who had plenty of money and should be fat. While he was having such thoughts, suddenly he felt as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground but a snake landed on his shoulder. At that time the only thing he could do was to pray to God. The snake would bite him at any moment but suddenly it turned its head and started admiring its beauty in the mirror. The doctor was thus saved .

Answer: The old man who lived in a small street in Mumbai had to put up with the nuisance because of boys playing cricket outside his house. When on one evening the boys were particularly noisy, the old man went to talk to the boys.
2) Why did the boys stop playing cricket in the night outside the old man’s house?
Answer: Initially the old man promised to pay 25 rupees each week to the boys for playing cricket. Then next week he reduced the amount by saying that he was out of money and gave them 15 rupees. In the third week he gave the excuse of not receiving his pension and gave them rupees 10. And in the fourth week he told the boys that he could not afford to give them 25 rupees but he would pay 5 rupees each week. This made the boys disappointed and never played the game outside his house again.
