1.) When did people shake hands with their hearts?
Answer:In early times, people used to shake hands with their hands. Earlier people valued emotions and truly respected each other.
2.) What is the poet crying over? What help does he want from his son?
Answer:The poet is crying over his old good times where his laugh was real. The time when the poet laughed from his heart and not just by his teeth. He wants his son to help him laugh like earlier times. The poet wants to be innocent just like his son.
3.) “Most of all, I want to relearn
how to laugh, for my laugh in the mirror
shows only my teeth like a snake’s bare fangs !”
What does the poet mean by these lines?
Answer:Here the poet wants to tell that he wants to laugh genuinely. There was time in the poet’s life where he laughed from his heart not just by his teeth. Now when he laughs and looks himself into the mirror, he sees his teeth like a snake’s bare fangs which means his smile is toxic and not real.
4.) What is the tone of the poem?
Answer:The tone of the poem is nostalgic. It takes back to the time where emotions and feelings mattered above everything else. It is also ironic.
5.) “Now they shake hands without hearts:
while their left hands search
my empty pockets.”
Why do the left hands search empty pockets now? What does this indicate?
Answer: People now greet each other by looking at each other’s economic status. They don’t value the person but they value money. The left hands search for something in the pocket but in vain. This indicate that people prefer only money over values.
