1.) How are people’s basic needs connected with the environment?
Answer: Basic needs of the people are water, food, energy. Also fodder for the animals. These needs come from the land. The forested mountains are the sources of water and the source of rain. But when there is deforestation it leads to shortage of water and a change of rainfall patterns and therefore people are not able to get food and water. In this way people’s basic needs are connected with the environment.
2.) Wangari Maathai has described the environment of her childhood in the interview. Is the environment of her childhood different from the environment you live in? If yes, in what ways?
Answer: Wangari Maathai’s childhood environment was very pristine, beautiful and green. But the environment I live is way different from hers. I don’t everything so pristine environment now. There is much pollution and there is lack of cleanliness around me.
3.) According to Maathai, how are women responsible for the protection of the environment ?
Answer: Women told that there were in the need of firewood and building material. Maathai told them that in order to fulfill the needs, they have to plant trees to which the women agreed and started planting trees. This made way to protect the environment.
4.) What is the specific message of Wangari Maathai?
Answer: The specific message of Wangari Maathai is that when we plant a tree we plant hope. When we plant the tree, we plant the future for ourselves, for our children and for the flora and fauna. She believes that even if we are gone, the plants last.
