c) the rooms were unclean.

d) they felt that Bayaji should not be in the village.

3.) Patil gave back the customary betel leaves offered by Bayaji because he did not want to accept them from an untouchable.

a) they were bad.

b) it was their custom.

c) he felt that they were unnecessary.

d) he did not want to accept them from an untouchable.

4.) What was the intention of Kondiba and his companions, when they eyed each other?

Answer: Kondiba and his companions were jealous of Bayaji and his newly-built beautiful house. When they were invited they eyed each other with cruel intention in their minds. They wanted to ruin the house of Bayaji.

5.) “And then the undreamt-of -incident took place”. What was it? Who do you think was responsible for it?

Answer:Everything was in happy state on the day of house-warming ceremony. But then Bayaji’s new house had caught fire from all sides. It had suddenly flared up. It happened so sudden that everyone was shocked. I think it was Kondiba and his companion who had done such evil act. They were not happy with Bayaji’s beautiful house and out of the jealousy and anger, they must have done that act.

6.) ‘Bayaji’s death was the result of an accident due to petromax flare-up,’ was their conclusion. Do you accept it? If not, what do you think is the truth?

Answer:When the whole house burning in the fire, Bayaji went up and pulled the pictures of Buddha and Babasaheb from the wall. He then got crumbled in flames. Bayaji was actually deeply hurt and shocked by such cruel act. He had put not only his money but his heart in building his dream-house and everything went into ashes. I don’t think Bayaji’s deaths was because of an accident due to petromax flare-up but it was because of the evil act by his enemies who took revenge.

7.) Comment on Bayaji’s last wish: ‘Sons, I want you to build a storeyed house.’

Answer:Bayaji’s sons asked him what his last wish was on which he said that it was to build a storeyed house. Bayaji was a hard-working man and after his retirement he built a house for his family. But some jealous and evil people could take it and burned his house. Not only did they burn his house but they literally burned Bayaji’s dream, a dream he cherished for long time. He wanted that dream to be fulfilled and he wished that from his sons.

8.) ‘We`re starting on a house, not one with a concealed first floor but a regular twostoreyed house.’ What is the significance of this sentence?

Answer:Bayaji had built his dream house but with first floor concealed as he had been warned by Kondiba not to build storeyed house else he would not be fit to live in the village. When Kondiba saw Bayaji’s beautiful house, he and his companion became jealous of him and wanted to ruin his house. Then the house caught fire and in that Bayaji lost his life. His sons knew who the cruel people behind that were and then they became confident by saying that they would build a new house not with a concealed first floor but the regular one. They were firm on completing the dream of their father and didn’t have fear to hide the first floor. It shows that the sons have had enough and they were not going to tolerate further pressure of the upper caste people of the village anymore.

9.) ‘The Storeyed House is a powerful symbol of Dalit empowerment in India.’ Comment.

Answer: The Dalits have always been considered the untouchables since many years. There are still some people who consider themselves superior to others and such people discriminate others on the basis of the caste. Humanity should always come first, but some people fail this to understand. ‘The Storeyd House’ depicts how some people treat Dalits indifferently with them. In the story we can see that how Bayaji being a Dalit earned respect and money by his virtue and built his dream house. Even after the death of their father, Bayaji’s sons rather than weeping became strong and decided to fight against the cruel system of the casteism.

10.) What, according to you, are the major social problems in India ?

Answer:There are number of social problems in India. Poverty, child marriage, gender inequality, dowry system, illiteracy, corruption, caste system, women’s safety, etc are some of the most major social problems in Inda.

11.) What is the conflict in the story? Which is the turning point ?

Answer:The conflict in the story is that Bayaji might have agreed with Kondiba’s suggestion and built house but his sons were not afraid of upper caste people. After Bayaji’s death, his sons didn’t give up they were firm on their father’s last wish and started building the house. Unlike their father, they decided not to conceal the first floor. This is the turning point which shows that they were not scared of the cruel people and their intentions.

12.) What is the point of view of the writer? Pick out evidence from the story in support of your answer.

Answer: The writer wants to tell the people that though there is still discrimination on the basis of the caste, there are people who are not scared of such people. They are firm in their approach. But despite the discrimination they rose from it and face the challenges.

We’re starting on a house, not one with a concealed first floor but a regular two storeyed

house,’ replied the eldest son of Bayaji. And the six brothers resumed with

determination the work of digging the foundation of a two-storeyed house.’

The above lines tell that how firm the sons were on the fulfillment of their father’s last wish. Not only they wanted to complete their father’s wish but also they were firm to fight against cruel people by coming together. They wanted their father’s soul to rest in peace.

13.) The sons decided to build a storeyed house soon after the death of their father. What does this act of the sons signify?

Answer: The sons rather than weeping decided to build a storeyed house soon after the death because they wanted their father’s soul to be in peace after his death. Also this shows that they wanted to fulfill their father’s dream as soon as they could. They had deep love for their father. In other words, it can be said that they wanted to pay tribute to their beloved father.

14.) What according to you is the underlying theme of the story, ‘The Storeyed House’? Substantiate your view point with instances quoting from the story.

Answer: The most important and underlying theme of the story is caste discrimination. Bayaji was looked down upon by Kondiba and Bhauja. Bayaji had earned good job by his virtue. But despite his good position he was subject of discrimination by the headman of the village. Bayaji’s successful attempt of the house made Kondiba and his companion jealous of him and hence ruined it by burning it down. It’s enough that your offering is honoured; is it also necessary to eat it?

The above sentence show that how Konida treated Bayaji indifferently when he was offered betel leaves. He didn’t feel to eat anything that was from the untouchables.

This untouchable worm has got a swollen head.

He needs proper handling.’

The above lines once again focus how thoughts of some people are evil and they feel that untouchable’s are not worth of leading a good life.

To,

The police inspector,

Police headquarters,

Respected sir,

I am writing this to file a complaint against the people who set our house on fire. Let me tell you in detail what exactly happened. This morning we had house-warming ceremony and suddenly the house caught fire. My father lost his life in that incident. The report came and claimed that it was petromax flare up that took his life but the real reason is something else. There were some people who always discriminated us for our caste. And I am not just writing this on the basis of their treatment but I they had warned and threatened my father before building the house.

Even on the day of the ceremony, there were people who disliked the house and made certain actions that make me think that are responsible for such act. Everything was taken care of on the day of the ceremony so it is highly impossible that it was petromax flare up. Everyone was outside when someone might have gone in and burnt the house.

I have doubt on 4/5 people which I will tell you once you consider my complaint. I would request you to look into this matter as soon as possible. Waiting for your reply.

Yours faithfully

Everyone turned into ashes within a blink of an eye.

His eldest son Ramesh said, “ It happened around 6.00.p.m. My father went up to bring the photos and was crumbed in the fire and lost his life.”

He further added, “ It was not because of flare up. I know there are few people behind this evil act. I shall not leave them.”
