I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) Who was Bayaji ? Where did he work?
Answer: Bayaji was man of above sixty years. He worked in Bomaby(now Mumbai) in the dockyard for thirty-five years. Then he became supervisor after he got an extension for two years.
2.) Why did Bayaji return home?
Answer: Bayaji got retirement from his work and returned to his native place. Also he wanted to spend rest of his life in his native place.
3.) “Greetings to you, sir, how are things with you?” Bayaji greeted Bhujaba. Bhujaba became furious. Why did Bhujaba become furious? Do you think this is unusual? Explain.
Answer: Bhujaba was the head of the village. He was an arrogant man. When Bayaji greeted him with the above words, he became furious because it was age-old custom of greeting the head of the village or upper caste people by saying –My humble salutations to you. Bayaji just said Greetings which made Bhujaba angry. This is usual in especially in the rural areas where still there is discrimination. People who belong to upper caste try to dominate the lower caste people.
4.) Why was Bayaji tempted to knock down Bhujaba with his box?
Answer: When Bhujaba got angry with Bayaji, Bayaji wanted to knock down Bhujaba with his box but didn’t do so because first the box had important belongings of him and he could not afford to do that. Secondly he had gone back to his village for good reason and wanted to spend the rest of his life. He didn’t want to create conflict in the village so he resisted it.
5.) Why do you think Bhujaba insisted on knowing the exact amount received by Bayaji on his retirement?
Answer: Bhujaba wanted to know the exact amount received by Bayaji because he was to greedy and he might have wanted some money for him under his influence of being the head of the village.
6.) What was Bayaji’s dream?
Answer: Bayaji’s dream was to build a house out of his earnings. He dreamt of building a storeyed house.
