Comprehension
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) Aunt Jane thought that she had given away 2000 pounds instead of 200 pounds? What made her think so?
Answer: Aunt Jane is surprised to see Jack and Jill’s luxurious and lavish life. The couple had the furniture ,a car, piano, refrigerator and the radio. And Jack said that the couple owed everything they owned to Aunt Jane. On this Aunt Jane got confused and asked whether she had given cheque of2000 pounds to the couple by mistake instead of 200. Because in the cheque of200 she was sure they would not have a lavish life.
2.) What surprised Aunt Jane most? Why?
Answer: Aunt Jane is surprised at the fact that almost everything in the house is bought on the rent. The couple pays it via instalments. The thing the couple owns is the tyre of the car. She didn’t appreciate the couple’s idea of bringing everything on the installments. She is surprised as the life of luxury they are living is nothing but under the installments.
3.) “And the piano? …And the furniture?” What do these questions suggest?
Answer: Jack tells Aunt Jane how he bought a car in installments. It is then Aunt Jane asks whether radio, piano , furniture and everything is also bought in installments. The continuous questions asked by Aunt Jane show that she was shocked to know how the couple didn’t mind buying things on the installments and didn’t worry much of it.
4.) Would you buy so many things if you were Jack? Why?
Answer:If I were Jack, I would not buy so many things. I don’t like to buy things on installments as there would be constant pressure on me to pay the installments time to time and if I am not able to pay I might have to face overdue. I would not like to be under the burden of such things
5.) Who do you think first understood Aunt Jane? Substantiate your answer.
Answer:It was Jack who understood Aunt Jane first. When Aunt Jane constantly asks about their possession of the things in the house, he explains how he bought everything in simple installments. He justifies everything that is being asked to him. Aunt Jane gives the couple a cheque in order to pay one of their installments and possess at least one thing completely. It is then, Jack understands that she must have given good amount to them. Jack becomes happy when Jill told him that Aunt Jane gave them ten pounds .
6.) What would you have done with the 10 pounds if you were Jack/Jill?
Answer: If were Jill I would have cleared one of the complete installments from the 10 pounds.
7.) Did your parents buy anything by an easy instalment scheme? Do you support or oppose this scheme? Why?
Answer: No, parents have not bought anything by an easy installment scheme. But parents of my friend have bought a car on such scheme. Though the scheme seem to be easy and comfortable for those who want things, but I don’t like the idea of buying things on installments. I would save money and then think of buying things. I feel there is constant pressure of the EMIs and installments when we buy things from such schemes.
8.) Write a critical review of the play, ‘The Never-never Nest’ bringing out the point of view of the writer.
Answer: In the play’ The Never-never nest’ the writer wants to tell us that it is not a good option to buy things on installments. In the play there is young couple named Jack and Jill who have a baby. They want to lead a lavish life so they take everything literally everything on installments. There is no single thing that is completely owned by the couple. In the play there is Aunt Jane who disapproves their act and feels that they should not choose installments as their way of buying things. She feels that they should save money and lead a life of pressure free. But both Jack and Jill are opposite to Aunt Jane they feel that buying from such easy schemes mean comfortable life. What they don’t know is that there would be constant pressure of clearing the installments. When Aunt Jane comes to know that everything is bought on the installments, she gives them 10 pounds and asks them to clear one of their installments and own at least one thing completely. Jill gives the money to their doctor so clear his fees.
The play focus on the mentality of the people who take pleasure in living life with having luxurious things. The writer wants to tell that temporarily it may feel good to lead such life, but until one clears the installment one cannot claim their possession . Also there is constant pressure to clear installments and if it not done, there are high risk of overdue or penalty. The writer wants the readers to follow Aunt Jane who has high self-respect and has never been under such pressure in her life. She has not taken anyone’s penny and that has been her way of life. She wants the couple to follow the same thing. And the writer through Aunt Jane wants everyone of us to learn from her and not to be like Jack and Jill who lives life of half happiness.
