The Dear Departed –II
(One-Act play)
Comprehension
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) Justify the view that the husbands of Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan are men with no individuality.
Answer: Both Mr.Slater and Mr.Jordan are men who don’t fail to express what they feel and want. Mr. Slater obeys his wife and does what has been told him to do. Mr.Slater wears the slippers, shifts the bureau and the clock. He does everything as per his wife’s wish. The same case is with Mr.Jordan who says and does whatever his wife asks him to do. They don’t put forward their opinion. Even their concern is for both sisters to come together, they are unable to do so because of their stubborn wives.
2.) Discuss the irony in the title ‘The Dear Departed’.
Answer: Irony is something that happens when things are expected accordingly but in reality exactly opposite of it takes place. In the play ‘The Dear Departed’ the old man Abel wanted to live a happy and peaceful life with his daughters this is what is dreamt of and also he wanted his two daughters to sort their issues and be amiable with each other. But none of the things that Abel wished for happened in reality. Even the title suggests that money and material which was ‘dear’ to the daughters were departed when the father told them his decision.
3.) List the arguments the two sisters made to keep their father in their care.
Answer: The two sisters were not on good terms with each other. Both the sisters were greedy and wanted to have their father to live with them not for love but for his wealth. Mrs. Jordan tells her father to choose her as she would make him comfortable. Mrs.Slater argues saying that he should continue living with them. Then Mrs.Jordan says that after the stealing act of Mrs. Slater their father would not wish to live with Slaters.
4.) How does the quarrel between the old man’s daughters lead to father discovering the truth?
Answer: When the old man asks about his bureau and the clock, it is then, Mrs. Jordan discovers the truth of their stealing. She tells her father that Slaters shifted his bureau and clock thinking that the old man is dead. They did things before the arrival of the Jord
5.) List the comic elements in the play ‘The Dear Departed’.
Answer: There are some elements in the play that create comedy. The rush of the Slaters to hide bureau, the old man coming down the stairs(when everyone else considered he was dead) , the old man’s decision of marrying at such age also add fun elements.
6.) In what way is the play ‘The Dear Departed’ a commentary on the hollowness of human relationships?
Answer: The play is apt example of how a man can be selfish and greedy when he loves money more than human relations. In the play, both the sisters are greedy for money for their father. When they think that their father is dead, rather talking good about him, they tell each other how burden he was for them. And top of it they start to have his things divided between them. After the major twist of his arrival and declration of property to the one who will take care of him, the two sisters argue with each other. All they want is the money and the property and not the love of their father. They don’t have emotion of tenderness towards their father; they love materialistic things above anything else. This show how man is blinded with the things that are temporary. If the two sisters had amiable relationship, the things would have turned in a different way. This also shows how old people are neglected by their own children and how they are considered as burden.
7.) What are the three things that the father plans to do on Monday next? What effect does it have on his daughters?
Answer: The father plans to do three things on Monday next that are; first to go to the lawyer and alter his will. Second, he wants to go to the insurance office and pay his premium. Third thing he wants to do is to go to St.Philp’s Chruch and get married. The daughters are is shock to the decisions made by their father. They feel bad about not having the property to them.

Writing
I.) Imagine that you are the grandfather in the play. Write a letter to your friend, Mr. Tattersall inviting him to your marriage at ‘Ring-o-Bells with Mrs. John Shorrocks. Don’t forget to say why you are going to get married at this age.
Dear Tattersall,
How are you my dear friend? It has been ages since we have met. I miss you. This letter is give you good news. I am delighted to announce my marriage with Mrs. John Shorrocks. Let me tell you about her in detail. She is the owner of ‘Ring-O-Bells.’ She is indeed a wonderful woman and I am sure she would take care of me with much love. We have known each other for a long period of time now and have decided to get married. We are getting married on 24th December, 2021 at St. Philip’s Church. The time of the wedding is at 12pm. Since you are my close friend, I cordially invite you to my wedding with your family. After reading about my marriage at this you might wonder what made me take this decision at this age. A man really fells helpless when he gets older and the same case happened with me. I feel hollow and the reason is my two daughters. Amelia and Elizabeth have become greedy and don’t seem to want me anymore all they want is my money. A few days ago, Amelia thought that I am dead and sent the message to Elizabeth. Before Elizabeth’s arrival, Amelia and her husband stole my bureau and clock and kept it hidden. When Elizabeth came with her husband, both the sisters started discussing property and money rather than mourning over my death. When they discovered that I am very much alive and declared that I want to live with the ones who would take care of me, both of them had argument. The argument was not for my love, but for the money. I realized how selfish both of my daughters have been, it was then I declared that I would alter my will and get married. Loneliness kills a person within. I needed someone to take care of me and love me without any hidden intention and it was then I found Mrs. John Shorrocks to be worthy of it. I hope you understand your friend’s plight. I will be waiting for you to come with your family at my wedding. Blessings to your children.
Your loving friend
Abel Merryweather
