Every Success Story
Is also a Story of Great Failures
Comprehension
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) ‘To Lincoln, defeat was a detour and not a dead end.’ Justify this statement from the life of Lincoln.
Answer: Abraham Lincoln faced failures many times in his life. But that didn’t stop him. He failed in business twice. He was defeated in legislative race , congressional race, senatorial race. He overcame the pain of death of his sweetheart. He also faced nervous breakdown. But despite of these failures and defeats, he overcame with more power and got elected as the president of the United States at the age of 52. Defeat never defined or stopped Lincoln from achieving his success. Had he given up at the first failure, would the world have got one of the most intelligent presidents? Lincoln didn’t let any of his failure make him down, he rose up with every failure and eventually succeeded.
2.) What did Socrates suggest as the secret to success? Do you agree or disagree with him? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: Socrates was a great Greek philosopher. A young man asked him the secret of success. Then Socrates told the man to meet him near the river next morning. When they met the next day, Socrates asked him to walk with him towards the river. When the water got up, Socrates ducked the man into the water. The man struggled to get out with great efforts but Socrates didn’t help him. Socrates kept him there until he starting feeling uneasy, it was then Socrates pulled him out and the man started to gasp for air. Then Socrates asked him what was the most important thing that he wanted when he was in the water on which the man replied that it was air that he badly wanted. It was then Socrates revealed the secret telling him that the way he wanted the air badly he one should strive for the success in the same way. I totally agree with Socrates told the young man, one burning desire is enough to start the journey towards success.
