1.) Do you know these people? What is their specialty?
Answer: Yes, I know these people. They are Sudha Chandran, Stephen Hawkings and Helen Keller. Sudha Chandran is a well-known Indian actress and classical dancer who had accident in which she lost her leg. Despite that she never gave up and continued working. Stephen Hawking was world famous physicist, who had physical disability. But despite his disability he made remarkable contribution in physics. Helen Keller was an American author and advocate for the blind and deaf. She was blind and deaf but this didn’t stop her doing good things.
2.) What qualities do you think a person requires to become successful?
Answer: Sheer determination, unending efforts, optimistic attitude, attitude of never giving up, confidence, devotion toward work, ultimate dedication, etc. are some of the most important qualities a person should possess to become successful.
3.) What is your opinion about the attitude of society towards individuals with special needs?
Answer: People with special needs require special attention and care. But sometimes the society fails to understand this and ignores such people. There are two sides of a coin, there are some people in the society who feel that they are superior and don’t really pay heed to people with special needs.

1) ‘I call it my chicken drumstick,’ joked Nick. What does ‘it’ refer to? How does it help
him?
Answer: Nick refers ‘It’ to a small foot on his left hip which helps him balance and enables him to kick. He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up between his toes.
2.) What do you mean by ‘right girl / boy’ to marry?
Answer: ‘Right girl/boy’ is someone who understands their partner well and would be there in good and bad times. Nick is someone who has special needs and the right girl would be the one who understands and cares him.
3.) ‘His parents decided not to send him to a special school.’ Was Nick happy about his parents’ decision? Why or why not? What do you think about this decision?
Answer: Initially Nick was not happy about his parents’ decision to send him to mainstream school. He was afraid that he might get bullied or teased by other students; this very thought wanted him not to go the mainstream school. But then, he realized that his parents wanted him to be independent and gain confidence in life. I think his parents made the right decision, because it made him more confident.
4.) How did Nick’s parents help him to become independent?
Answer: Nick’s parents were determined to make him independent. His dad put him in the water at 18 months and gave the courage to learn how to swim. His father who was a computer programmer and accountant, taught him how to type with his toe at just 6 years old. His mother invented a special plastic device that meant he could hold a pen and pencil.
5.) Pick out the symptoms of Nick’s depression. Do you think his depression was normal or something unique about him? Give reasons for your opinion.
Answer: Nick was deeply depressed when he was just eight years old. He went to his mother crying and said that he wanted to kill himself. He felt cold and bitter. He hated God for doing that to him. I think his depression was normal because anyone is his shoes would have felt the same thing.
6.) Which incident in this text is funny? What makes it funny?
Answer: Once Nick was in a car and a girl at traffic lights was looking at him interestingly. She could only see his head so he decided to do a 360-degree spin in the car seat to freak her out. She was so amazed at his action that she sped off quickly.This incident is funny.
7.) What made Nick choose Bethany Hamilton as his teacher to learn surfing?
Answer: Nick went to Hawaii in 2008 where he surfing master Bethany Hamilton. She had her arm bitten off by a shark when she was 12. She taught Nick how to surf. She was in the same situation as Nick was in, so understood him well and made him surf. It was there he learned to do the 360-degree spins on his board. It was their similarity that made Nick choose Bethany as his teacher to learn surfing.
8.) Which aspect of Nick’s physical condition helps him to do a 360-degree spin?
Answer: Nick has a very low centre of gravity which makes him balance well. So, he does a 360-degree spin.

Answer: There are many things that I have learnt from the life of Nick Vujicic. His optimistic approach toward life is something I wish to have. Despite his disabilities, he never gave up and faced every challenges. His attitude of making difference and helping other’ lives is worth noticing.
11.) Do you think disability is an obstacle to achieve success in life? Substantiate your argument citing evidences from Nick Vujicic’s biographical account ‘Attitude is Altitude.’
Answer: No, I don’t think disability is an obstacle to achieve success in life.In the learnt text a young boy named Nick is someone who does not have arms and legs. But despite this he plays football and golf, swims and surfs. He didn’t waste his time crying over his disabilities, but he became optimistic and independent in life. In 1990 he won the Australian Young Citizen of the Year award for his bravery and perseverance. His specialty is that he can spin 360 degrees on a board. He travels just like any other human being. He is a motivational speaker and helps other people build confidence.
II.) Given below are some of the statements made by Nick Vujicic. Which of these are substantiated by Nick’s life?
1.) I realized why God had made us like this – to give hope to others.
Answer: When Nick was 13 years old, he read an article about a disabled man in a newspaper. The article was about a man, who had managed to achieve great things and helped others. It was then, he realized that God had special purpose behind creating people like him. It was to give hope to others and encourage people around them.
2.) I wanted to concentrate on something good that I had.
Answer: Nick was optimistic in his life. He looked at the brighter side of the life. Though the world may see his disabilities, but he knew that they would never take away the beauty of his eyes. He wanted to focus on the things which are good and best.
3.) I tell people to keep on getting up when they fall and to always love themselves.
Answer: Nick is a determined person. Though he cannot do things easily as a normal person would do, he never gives up. He keeps trying and preaches the same to the people around him. He accepts himself the way he is. He does not complaint about himself and asks people to do the same.
4.) If I can encourage just one person, then my job in this life is done.
Answer: Nick’s life is an inspiration to many. As a motivational speaker, he motivates others to be themselves and try again in life. He utters the above words because when he motivates even a single person successfully, he feels his intention of helping others is accomplished.

Biographical sketch of Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking is considered as one of the best physicist of the world. He was born on 8th January, 1942 at Oxford in England. He was the eldest of the four sons of Isobel Hawkig and Frank Hawking. His father was a a medical researcher with a specialty in tropical diseases.
Hawking was recognized as a bright student. In his high school years though, he came third from the bottom of his class. He was an active boy outside of school. He loved playing board games. At the young age of 16, he constructed a computer out of recycled parts. He also solved rudimentary mathematical equations. In short, he was born intelligent.
He married Jane Wilde. He was suffered from serious medical condition. He had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. But despite his disability, he achieved greater things in life. He researched on black holes and is still considered to be one of the most important researches of all time. He also added another feather in his cap by discovering a radiation. The radiation wad named after him, Hawking Radiation.
He became a fellow of the Royal Society at the age of 32. He was also awarded with the prestigious Albert Einstein Award. In 1975, he was honored with The Pius XI- Gold Medal for his contribution in Science from Pope Paul VI. Hawking’s disability didn’t stop him from achieving greater things in life. He didn’t give up and served for the society . His contribution to the advancement of science and society research is something that everyone is appreciates. He truly was wonder man.
