Spherical Lenses

Can you study or observe the beautiful and scenic sky, planets or stars with necked eyes? See the following pictures, in which one group of students are observing the wonderful sky and another group is trying to see something in science laboratory of school.

Which instruments are they using? What does it contain? They all are using the instrument known as telescope and microscope, which is essential for observation micro and macro things. This instrument works on the principle of refraction of light. i.e. when light rays are allowed to pass through transparent material, then it changes the direction. This property of light is widely used in construction of instruments like telescope, microscopes.

For such applications transparent materials are required, through which light can pass and shows significant changes in its direction i.e. lenses. Transparent material bounded by at least one spherical surface is called as spherical lens. Spherical lenses may have inward or outward bulging. There are two types of spherical lenses, viz. Concave lens and convex lens. Following are some important uses of spherical lenses,

  • Spherical lenses are used for manufacturing of telescope, microscope etc.
  • Person with disability of vision uses spherical lens for corrected vision.
  • It is required in photographic cameras, scanner etc.
