Simple Equations
Question 1:
Write the following statement in the form of equation one eight of x is 5 more than 3.
(a) x/8 + 5 = 3
(b) x/8 – 3 = 5
(c) 3/x – 8 = 5
(d) x/8 – 5 = 3
Ans:
One eight of X is x/8
It is greater than 7 by 3.
This means the difference (x/8 – 3) is 5 the equation is x/8 – 3 = 8/5 (b)
Question 2:
Add 9 to three times P to get 100.
(a) 3P + 9 = 100
(b) 3P – 100 = 9
(c) 3P + 100 = 9
(d) 3P – 9 = 100
Ans:
(a) 3P + 9 = 100,
three times of P = 3P add 9 = 3P + 9 gives 100, 3P + 9 = 100
Question 3:
Shweta’s mother’s age is 7 years more than four times of shweta’s age. Shweta’s mother’s age is 55 years old. Set up an equation to find shweta’s age.
(a) 4m +7 = 55
(b) 4m – 7 = 55
(c) 4m + 55 = 7
(d) 4m – 55 = 7
Ans:
We don’t know Shweta’s age let us take to be m years. Four times of Shweta’s age 4m years. Shweta’s mother’s age 7 year more than 4m that Shweta’s mother’s age is (4m + 7) years old. Shweta’s mother’s age is 55 years old.
(a) 4m + 7 = 55 it will give Shweta’s age when solved.
Question 4:
The sum of three times x and 13 is 34.
(a) 3x – 13 = 34
(b) 3x + 13
(c) 3x – 34 = 3
(d) 3x + 13 = 34
Ans:
(d) 3x + 13 = 34, three times x = 3x it gives 34 = sum of 13 = 3x + 13
= 3x + 13 = 34
Question 5:
Choose the correct value of variable which satisfy following equation.
4n + 17 = 25
(a) 1
(b) 2
(c) 3
(d) 4
Ans:
Put n = 1, 4×1+17 = 25 does no satisfy
Put n = 2, 4×2+17 = 25 satisfy the equation solve it so on (b) 2.
Question 6:
Write the following equation in statement forms.
7x + 8 = 53
(a) Seven times of x plus 8 gives 53
(b) 8 times of y plus + 7 gives = 53
(c) Seven times of x plus 9 gives 63
(d) 8 times of x minus 7 gives 53
Ans:
(a) Seven times of x plus 8 gives 53.
Question 7:
Solve 3P – 6 = 18 and find the value of P?
(a) 4
(b) 2
(c) 8
(d) 3
Ans:
(c) 8,
3P – 6 = 18 add 6 on both
L.H.S 3P – 6 + 6 = 18 + 6
3P = 24 divide by 3 on both L.H.S and R.H.S 3P/3 = 24/3 give P = 8 (c)
Question 8:
Solve m/5 + 20 = 45 find the value of m?
(a) m = 45
(b) m = 20
(c) m = 120
(d) m = 125
Ans:
(d) 125,
m + 20 = 45.
Subtracted -20 on both L.H.S and R.H.S m/5 +20 – 20 = 45 – 20 m/5 = 25 multiply by 5 on both L.H.S and R.H.S m/5 × 5 = 25 × 5
= m = 125
Question 9:
Solve the following equation 2(x + 5) = 14
(a) 3
(b) 4
(c) 2
(d) 1
Ans:
(c) x = 2
2(x + 5) = 1 divide both L.H.S and R.H.S by 2. 2(x + 5)/2 = 14/2
(x + 5) = 7 subtracted 5,
From both L.H.S and R.H.S x+5-5 = 7-5, L.H.S = 2 = x.
Question 10:
3y + 3/2 = 27/2 solve this equation.
(a) 5
(b) 8
(c) 3
(d) 4
Ans:
(b) 8.
3y + 3/2 = 27/2 subtracted – 3/2
From both L.H.S and R.H.S 3y + 3/2 – 3/2 = 27/2 – 3/2, 3y = 24 divide by 3
On both L.H.S and R.H.S 3y/3 = 24/3, y = 8
Question 11:
4+5 (P-7) = 84 Solve this equation.
(a) 26
(b) 25
(c) 23
(d) 24
Ans:
(c) 23.
4+5 (P-7) = 84
4+5 (P-7) = 84 – 4
we transfer 4
5(P-7) = 80
5(P – 7)/5 = 80/5 divide both sides by 5
P – 7 = 16, P = 16+7, P = 23
Question 12:
Solve the equation x/7 + 20 = 34
(a) 98
(b) 72
(c) 84
(d) 70
Ans:
(a) 98
x/7 + 20 = 34 transfer 20 on R.H.S
x/7 = 34 – 20, x =14 multiply by 7 on both sides x/7 × 7 = 17×7
= x = 98
Question 13:
Solve the following equation.
Add 6 to four times a number you get 62.
(a) 15
(b) 14
(c) 16
(d) 17
Ans:
(b) 14
Four times no = 4 × X
= we take a number is x,
add 6.
4x + 6 = 62,
4x = 62 – 6
4x = 56,
4 × x/4 = 56/4,
x = 14
Question 14:
Akshara thinks of a number. If she takes 0 way 9 from 7/2 of the number the result 54.
(a) 14
(b) 18
(c) 19
(d) 15
Ans:
(b) 18.
We take the number is x.
from the above example
7/2 x – 9 = 54
7/2 x = 54 + 9,
7x/2 × 2/7 = 63 × 2/7,
7/2 x = 63
x = 18 by calculating it.
Question 15:
In an isosceles triangle, the base angle are equal. The vertex angle is 80°. What are the base angles of the triangle?
(a)70°
(b) 60°
(c) 50°
(d) 80°
Ans:
(c) 50°
The base angle is x two same angle means 2x.
The sum of three angles of a triangle is 180°. Vertex angle is 80°
2x + 80° = 180°
2x = 180° – 80°
2x = 100°
2x/2 = 100°/2
x = 50°
The base angle is 50°
