Should there be laws against using cell phones while driving? Essay : Using a cell phone while driving is extremely as it can take away the life of the person who is driving and the pedestrians as well. Especially when the driver is physically holding a handset in one hand and holding the steering in the other, there are high chances of colliding with a person or another vehicle that crosses its way. Thus there is a dire need of enforcing laws related to the use of cell phones while driving vehicles. Research has shown that when drivers speak over the phone, they get reluctant in taking immediate action when it comes to applying brakes.

Various dangers are associated with the use of cell phones while the cars are driven to their destination. This is because the chances of collision accelerate fourfold. The victims of the car crash suffer injuries in the form of scraps, head injuries, back injuries, and chest injuries and with the worsening of the situation, the victim may even die. In India, one of the primary causes of road accidents is careless driving wherein a total of 1,55,622 people lost their lives due to this reason. Mostly, cab drivers need to attain phone calls because they are compelled to assume the role of a multi-tasker. They need to address the phone calls of the passengers who are the next in the queue to board the car. In this regard, there is no harm in attending calls, nevertheless, it has to be done in a careful way.
Contrary to this particular matter, 47 per cent of Indian drivers agreed that they receive phone calls while they drive the cars, obviously for a suitable reason related to the cause. In addition, 60 per cent of drivers agreed that they don’t prefer receiving phone calls while they drive their cars as it deviates their concentration.
In response to insensible driving, the Indian Government has amended the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and made it effective from 2019. The new law says that heavy penalties will be imposed on those people who will be defaulters of the traffic rules. As per the new Motor Vehicles Act 2019, drivers who are using mobile phones while driving will be charged a fine of Rs 100. This immediate action of taken to ensure that the drivers abide by the traffic laws and safety rules while they drive their cars. Also, the Nissan Indian survey found that 60 per cent of drivers use cell phones while driving and because of these people, Indian roads have become unsafe for pedestrians. The survey was conducted in 20 states comprising Punjab, Kerala and Delhi to assess the driving habits of the motorist and chauffeurs. Furthermore, the survey also found that 53 per cent of respondents prefer staying in connection with their families while they drive.

In conclusion, it can be said that drivers shall carefully attend phone calls only if they are deemed essential while they drive their cars. Except for serious reasons, they are not supposed to attend phone calls as they will be penalised under the revised Motor Vehicles Act of 2019. However, with the worsening of the situation, accidents may take place for which the drivers may be sentenced to life imprisonment.
