Essay on Should animal testing be allowed? for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Should animal testing be allowed? Essay : Animals are used to determine the toxicity of medicines, monitor the safety of the products that are directed towards human use, develop medical treatment and also assess commercial, biomedical and healthcare uses of the medicine. India has been the first country to put a ban on animal testing and it is strengthening its anti-animal testing legislation. Advocates of animal testing say that it led to the development of various life-saving treatments and also their alternatives have not yet been found. However, the opponents claim that animal testing for any research or medical purposes reflects cruelty as it is heinous crime to take any living organism’s life. As opined by Human Society International, animals who are put to experiment are subjected to water, food and feeding deprivation. The infliction of pain on the animals which takes the form of decapitation, carbon dioxide asphyxiation and neck breaking does absolute injustice to them. Thus, whether animal testing should be allowed still remains a matter of controversy.
Discussion
Organisations such as PETA or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are the leading animal rights organisations in the world. It is reported to have 90 per cent of animals although it has the mission to put an end to the use of animals for testing and experiments. In the name of protecting animals, they are blatantly killing animals to satisfy their own selfish and economic needs. The proponents in this regard claim that animal testing is not putting the life of human beings at stake. According to them, the value of human beings is placed over animals. On the contrary, this concept of experimenting on animals is highly detested because once the test is done the animals are euthanised. In addition, many animals are even purposely bred for the sake of putting them into various experiments. For instance, almost one million animals such as amphibians, reptiles, birds and agricultural animals in the United States are captivated in laboratories for testing. This is a ghastly act that is increasing daily, even by organisations that aim to fight for animal rights.
Some proponents even argue that animal testing is needed to ensure that the vaccinations that are administered to the human body are safe. In this context, Nikolai Petrovesky a Professor at Flinders Medical College in Australia said that testing the coronavirus vaccine on animals is extremely essential. This is because it helps in assessing whether the vaccine will be effective in preventing the disease when it is administered to the human body. On the other hand, some refute that experiments that are done on animals make lead to poor test results. This is because the metabolic, cellular and anatomic differences make animals poor models for human beings.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that various alternatives to animal testing can be adopted. These can be in vitro testing, computer (in silico modelling), micro-dosing and human patent stimulators. With the help of these alternatives, animals can be saved from being put into merciless euthanasia and animal testing.
