Sentence for Class 6 English Grammar:
Sentence – A group of words that makes sense called a sentence.
* Sentences are of five different kinds.
(1) Assertive sentence
(2) Interrogative sentence
(3) Imperative sentence
(4) Optative sentence
(5) Exclamatory sentence
Assertive sentence –
This sentence means statement. Assertive sentence ends with a full stop.
For eg – Uma is a good girl.
The above example denotes a statement.

Imperative sentence –
This sentence denotes commands, request. Imperative sentence also ends with a full stop (.)
* In imperative sentence (the subject you is omitted. The verb comes first & the remaining part is the same as assertive sentence.
* However the adverb ‘please’, kindly is used.
* Rules for arrangement of such sentence is

Interrogative sentence –
This sentence denotes questions & ends a question mark (?) or the mark of interrogation (?)
* The verb (be) its forms – is, am, are, was, were; (have) & its forms – shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might are placed before the subject.
Eg – Is she your brother?
Has he got a bad breath?
* The verb (do) & its form such as (do, did, does) is placed before the subject in absent of the listed verbs.
For eg – Do you play cricket?
Does Mala sing regularly?
* (Wh – words) comes first if necessary.
(Who – whose, whom, which, what, when, where, how, why)
Optative sentence –
This sentence defines prayer or desire. Optative sentence also ends with a full stop (.).
* ‘May’ + assertive sentence = Optative
For eg – (i) May + you long live.
(ii) May the sky break down upon you.
* Sometimes ‘may’ is omitted.
Long live the king – (may the king live long)
Exclamatory sentence –
This sentence is use to express joy, sorrow, wonder etc. Exclamatory sentence used exclamatory mark (!)
* Words generally used are Alas!, Hurra
Alas + Assertive sentence = Exclamatory
For eg – Alas! We lost the match.
* Words such as what, how is also used is exclamatory sentence.
What/How + assertive sentence exclamatory
For eg – (1) What a juicy mango it is!
(2) How hot it is today!
