Discussion
An average study has shown that a person in India wastes about 45 litres of water and if it continues in the long run, India is sooner to get transformed into an arid country and suffer from scarcity of water. The reasons behind water scarcity in the world are listed below follows:
- The first cause is increased human consumption which implies the inadequacy of potable water as most of the water gets polluted due to contamination. Countries such as Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan face shortages of potable water.
- Natural calamities such as drought cause water shortages which lead to the water crisis. For instance, in India, almost 10 states have been affected by drought, out of which Maharashtra, is devoid of irrigation facilities due to water shortage.
- In Punjab and in Western Uttar Pradesh, groundwater is recklessly used for domestic use, irrigation and drinking purposes which has resulted in the paucity of water.
There are various ways by which water can be saved. Educating people about saving water can go a long way in water conservation. In India, water-saving schemes are taken by the central government of India. For instance, the Jal Shakti Abhiyan launched in 2019 aimed to encourage citizens to conserve water by judiciously using it. It covered all the states beginning from the urban to the rural areas. Another project is known as the Jal Sanchay which was started in the Nalanda districts of Bihar and was concerned with constructing dams and renovating the traditional water bodies and the irrigation systems. Apart from this, it is recommended to turn off the faucet when not in use, recycle wastewater, check for leaks in the toilets and use low-flush toilets.
Practising rainwater harvesting for replenishing the groundwater level and conserving natural water. Moreover, greywater recycling can also be practised to reduce water wastage from domestic sources. Installation of water meters also helps in measuring the amount of water that is used in commercial and residential areas.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that people across the globe will suffer miserably in the absence of water. It is also necessary to check the ever-increasing population which is another factor that has contributed to the depletion of water at a fast pace. To mark the importance of saving water, 22nd March is celebrated as World Water day across the world. Moreover, celebrating this day will ensure that all people living in this world can get adequate access to safe water for better and healthy living.
