1.) Describe the character and life of the Grandmother.

Answer:The grandmother is woman with grey hair and hobbling gait. Despite her fragility, she has a powerful and resonant voice. She has witnessed many generations. She was born in the time when there were no TVs, motors, no aeroplanes, no movies and that was the time when there was less noise and pollution. She has spent much of her life in the village on the slopes of Dharamgiri. She loves nature. She is of the opinion that the nature speaks to us if we hear it carefully.

2.) What sort of business was Sagar talking about?

Answer:Sagar was talking about the tourism business. He wanted to build a multi-storied hotel on the top of the mountain Dharmagiri which would be one of the best hotels in the country.

3 ). How did Sagar try to play down the alarm of building the hotel?

Answer: The villagers went to Sagar to explain him that building the hotel would not only ruin the village but also the mountain itself. The mountain would be ruined if there was a deep dig into the foundation. Then Sagar asked the villagers if they knew more than the engineers and the architects from the big city.

4.) What sort of a person was Mr. Dixit? ·

Answer:Mr. Dixit was a multimillionaire who owned two dozen cinema houses, five luxury hotels , three drug companies and the biggest biscuit factory in India. He was a selfish man with no feelings for the people or the nature. He was just a greedy man.

5.) Why was building on the mountain dangerous? .

Answer:When the temple was built three hundred years ago, the villagers realized that the earth there cannot hold a structure taller than thirty fee t. It would be dangerous to dig too deep for foundation and this is why it was dangerous to build on the mountain.

6.) The Grandmother is simple and rustic. Yet she is an environmentalist. Explain

Answer:The grandmother has lived in the village her entire life. She loves the nature and she is grateful to the nature for the things it has given. She is a simple woman who cares about the environment. She has strong beliefs on the environment. She strongly opposes the idea of building the five – star hotel. She believes that the mountains, the trees, the animals, all of them speak just like we humans do, but we humans fail to listen to them. She understands the nature and embraces it.
