(a) Answer each question briefly
1.) What is a legend?
Answer: A tale passed down from the past is a legend. Despite the fact that its veracity cannot be established, it has been handed down from ancient times by tradition and is widely accepted as true.
2.) Who was Bragi ? What was he called and why ?
Answer: Bragi was the son of the king of all Gods, Odin. He was called as the God of song and poetry because he sang songs sweetly.
3.) Who was Idun ? Where did she live ?
Answer: Idun was the daughter of a dwarf. She lived beneath the earth in dark caves.
4.) How was Idun different from her father and brothers ?
Answer: Idun’s father and brothers were ugly but Idun was beautiful and gentle and kind-hearted. She could walk about among the trees and flowers in the daylight and no harm could come to her.
5.) How were Bragi and Idun married ?
Answer: Bragi immediately fell in love with Idun when he saw her. He took her with him to Asgard, and there they were married.
6.) What was special about the golden apples ?
Answer: The special things about the golden apples were that the gods and goddesses ate to keep themselves everlastingly young and immortal. Without the golden apples, they would have grown old and died, just like mortals.
7.) What happened when Loki hit the eagle with a stick ?
Answer: When Loki hit the eagle with a stick, he found that he could not lift the stick from the eagle’s body nor or could he let go end that he was holding.
8.) Where did Loki take Idun and why?
Answer: Loki took Idun to a dark forest as he had promised Thiazi, the storm giant that if he made him free then he would give Idun the golden apples.
9.) What happened when Idun reached the forest ?
Answer: As Idun and Loki walked atnong the trees, a big eagle swooped down from the trees and seized Idun. The eagle carried her away, up over the trees and back to his own home in jotunheim
10.). How did the gods feel when Idun had gone ?
Answer: When Idun had gone, the gods missed her and wondered where she had gone.
Bragi grew sad without his wife and the gods felt tired and worn out without the golden apples of youth and immortality.
11.) Loki had deceived Idun once. Then why did she trust him again?
Answer: Loki had deceived Idum once but still she trusted him again because there was no other way of returning to Asgard.
12.) What happened when Loki flew back with Idun?
Answer: When Loki flew back with Idum, Thiazi saw them and changed himself into an eagle and followed them.
13.) Who were the eagle and the hawk ? Which of the two was more powerful?
Answer: The storm giant Thiazi was the eagle, and Loki, the God of Fire, was the hawk. The eagle was more powerful.
(b) Answer each question in about 100 words :
1.) Describe in your own words the incident of the cooking deer.
Answer: Once Odin and two of the other gods, Loki and Honir, were travelling through the world, looking for adventure. After a long time, they became tired and weary. Then they killed a deer and decided to cook, eat it and then take rest. But then an evil power disguised as an eagle prevented the deer from cooking. Then Honir asked the eagle if he was stopping the deer from cooking to which the eagle replied that it will be cooked if he shared the food with him. The meat was cooked after the gods agreed. But the eagle wanted to have all the meat for himself. This made Loki very angry and then he picked up a stick and dealt the eagle a powerful blow. But he found that he could not lift the stick from the eagle’s body, nor could he let go the end he was holding. Then the eagle rose into the sky, and Loki also rose with it and Loki turned into storm giant Thiazi.
2.) How was Thiazi able to carry away Idun and the golden apples ?
Answer: Thiazi freed Loki only on one condition that he would ensure Idun getting her golden apples into his control. Back in Asgard, Loki went to Idun and told her that he had found a tree, covered with golden apples like hers, in a wood near Asgard. Idun wanted to see the tree herself. Loki suggested Idun to take her golden apples and compare them with that the other apples. Then she carried her box of apples and followed Loki to the forest. As they reached the forest, Thiazi, in disguise of an eagle seized her with the box of golden apples.
3.) How did the gods come to know where Idun had gone ?
Answer:Idun was kidnapped and kept jotunheim. Gods wondered where she was. Gods felt tired without the golden apples as they gave them youth. When there was a meeting, one of them told that he had seen Idun go out of Asgard Loki, carrying the box of the golden apples. Then he confessed that he had role in Idun’s disappearance and he handed over Idun to the storm giant Thaizi.
4.) How did Thiazi meet his end ?
Answer: As it was decided, Loki went to Thiazi’s castle after chasing himself into a hawk. Then Loki met Idun and convinced to join him. Then he said some magical words over her and she was turned into a tiny nut. Loki changed back into the hawk and picked up the nuts and went back to Asgard. Thiaizi saw that and changed himself into an eagle. Then the eagle persuaded the hawk. Then the gods saw that the eagle was following the hawk and it was then they lit fire before the walls of the Asgard. The flames rose high. Loki, being the god of fire, crossed the fire effortlessly. But the eagle which was following it, got his wings half burnt and fell on the ground, then the gods killed him.
