Working with the text

1.) Answer the following questions

i) By whom was the tiger cub discovered?

Answer:The tiger was discovered by the author’s grandfather.

 

ii) Where was it discovered?

Answer:It was discovered by the grandfather on a hunting expedition in the Terai jungle near Dehra.

 

iii) What was the name of the tiger cub?

Answer:The tiger cub’s name was Timothy.

 

iv) Who named it?

Answer:The tiger was named Timothy by the narrator’s grandfather.

 

v)What were the two companions of the tiger cub in grandfather’s house?

Answer:Two companions of the tiger were Toto the monkey and a small mongrel puppy.

 

vi) What was the favourite place of the tiger cub in the house?

Answer:Timothy’s favorite place in the house was the drawing room where he would make himself comfortable on the long sofa.

 

vii) What was the visible change of the tiger cub when it was six months old?

Answer:When the tiger cub was six months old, there was a visible change in it, which was that he grew steadily less friendly.

 

viii) Why was the tiger transferred to the zoo?

Answer:When Timothy grew six months old, he changed a lot. He became less friendly. He would create mess over here and there. He had to be chained up more often. When he began to stalk Mahmoud about the house with the villainous intent, then the grandfather decided to transfer him to the zoo.

 

ix) What annoyed grandfather when he went to meet his tiger in the Zoo?

Answer:Grandfather was annoyed by the leopard. When Timothy came close to the grandfather, the leopard would rush at the bar and snarled at him and this irritated the grandfather.

Answer: The keeper requested grandfather to continue with their conversation.

 

iv) Grandfather said, “Why don’t you put him somewhere else?”

Answer: Grandfather asked why don’t they put him somewhere else.

 

v) Grandfather said, “Goodnight, Timothy”

Answer: Grandfather wished goodnight to Timothy.

 

5.) Find out the meaning of the following words by looking them up in the dictionary. Then use them in sentences of your own.

8.) Write a short paragraph (in about 30 words) on the tiger cub’s habits.

Answer:The tiger cub, Timothy had clean habits. Like a cat, he would use his paws to scrub his face. He slept at night in the cook’s quarters, and was always delighted at being let out by him in the morning.
