Answer these questions

1.) How does the author describe the lands where he went on a hike?

Answer: The author describes the lands where he went on hike as barren and monotonous. Nothing grew there except wild lavender.

2.) How did he ‘chance’ to meet the shepherd?

Answer: He chanced to meet the shepherd when he was searching for water in the mountain.

3.) The author gives a detailed picture of the shepherd and his place of living . What does he say?

Answer: The roof was solid and water-tight. The shepherd’s household was in order, his dishes washed and his floor swept. He was also freshly shaven, that all his buttons were solidly sewn, and his clothes were mended with such care as to make the patches invisible. His dog, as silent as he, was friendly without being fawning

4.) What did the shepherd do with the acorns in his house?

Answer: The shepherd took out a bag and poured a pile of acorns out onto the table. He began to examine them one after another with a great deal of attention, separating the good ones from the bad. The author offered to help him, but he told him that it was his own business. The author didn’t insist after seeing the care that he devoted to his job. He then counted them into packets of them. Then, he eliminated some more of the acorns, throwing away the smaller ones and those that showed even the slightest crack, for he examined them very slowly. When he had before him one hundred perfect acorns, he stopped and he went to bed.

5.) What did he do with them the next morning?

Answer:In the next morning, the shepherd soaked acorns in a bucket of water, the little sack containing the acorns that he had so carefully chosen and counted. The shepherd carried a sort of walking stick an iron rod as thick as his thumb and about one and a half meters long. When he reached the place, he began to pound his iron rod into the ground. This made a hole in which he placed an acorn and he covered the hole again. He was planting oak trees.

6.) “He counted on losing another ten thousand to everything else that is unpredictable.” What did he mean by this?

Answer: By the above statement he meant that either the number of trees will be destroyed or would not stay in the future time.

7.) In 1945 when the author visited the place last, he mentions, “I no longer recognised the landmarks I knew from my earlier visits. What were the changes that had taken place there?

Answer: The changes the author witnessed was amazing. He saw that once the ruined site, there were now well-kept farms, which was the sign of a happy and comfortable life. The old springs once again began to flow. The brooks had been channelled. Beside each farm, amid groves of maples, the pools of fountains were bordered by carpets of fresh mint.
