(1) Narrate the circumstances that led to the abandoning of the aged in Shining.

Answer: The country Shining was ruled by a cruel governor. He imposed a cruel law that all aged people should be put to death. There was a poor farmer who loved his old mother very much that the thought of losing her made him sad. He thought twice about it and decided to take his mother to Obatsuyama, the mountain of the “abandoning of the aged”. The journey was rather painful. When they finally reached the summit the famer was not ready to leave his mother. So he carried her but the burden felt light because he was happy to take her back home. After returning home he hid his mother in walled closet beneath the kitchen floor. When the governor ordered to present him with rope of ashes his mother suggested him to make rope of ashes. Then the governor was amazed by his wit and asked him the reason behind it, then the farmer told the truth. It was then the governor abolished the law.

 

(2) Describe the farmer’s painful journey up the mountain.

Answer: In the country of Shining a cruel rule was imposed to put all the aged to the death. A famer and his mother was sad. Finally the farmer decided to take her to summit called as Obatsuyama. For the journey he carried he took a quantity of dried unwhitened rice and gourd filled with water. He carried his mother on his back and started his painful journey. The road was long and steep; the narrow road was crossed and re-crossed by many paths made by the hunters and woodcutters. In some place, they lost and confuses, but he gave no heed. He went on climbing up high.The mother was aware that her didn’t know many mountain paths so she very smartly dropped twigs for their every step as a mark of direction. She did it because it would make her son’s return to home easy.

 

(3) ‘The old are wise’. Prove this with reference to the story ‘The Aged Mother.

Answer: It is rightly said that an elderly person is like living treasure. This is indeed true in the story ‘The Aged Mother.’ Not only the story depicts the unconditional love between a mother and a son but also it shows how old people give the right direction. The instance could be found when the mother drops the twigs every few steps as a mark of direction for his son to return home. She knew that his son didn’t know many mountain paths so she does that to help him, this shows how clever she was. The second instance is of rope of ashes. When the governor ordered to present the rope of ashes, it was she who suggested her son to make rope of twisted straw. He stretchs the straw row of flat stones and burn sit on a windless night. When the governor comes to know about his wit he asks him about his wisdom then the farmer tells him the true story. It was his old mother’s clever mind and kind heart that made the governor abolish the cruel law and realize his mistake. This proves how old people are wise and their experience proves to be a life changing for us.
