Answer: Watson felt horrified when he heard of Holmes illness. He had not heard about his illness before.

Answer: The landlady didn’t call the doctor because Holmes didn’t allow her to call him and she could not disobey him.

Answer: When Watson saw Holmes, he had a gaunt face. His eyes had the brightness of fever, his cheeks were flushed, and his hand twitched all the time. He lay listless.

Answer: Holmes didn’t allow Watson to examine because he told him that he was suffering from a contagious disease. In reality Holmes was just pretending to be sick and he didn’t want Watson to know so he gave him the reason of contagious disease.

Answer: Holmes didn’t like his things to be touched by anyone so he warned Holmes not to touch his things. Watson felt dejected and sat in silence.

Answer: Mr. Culverton Smith was the man who had the knowledge of the disease. He was a planter.

Answer: Holmes asked Watson to put coins in his pockets ,light the gas lamp but half on. He also asked him to place some letters and paper and place the ivory box on the table within his reach.

(1) How did Holmes trap Mr. Culverton Smith to confess the murder?
Answer: For past three days Holmes was seriously ill and this made his landlady worried. She called his assistant Dr. Watson. When he saw Holmes’ condition he felt bad for his condition. He wanted to examine him but Holmes who was just pretending to be sick didn’t allow him to examine. He asked Watson to bring Smith to his come who was the only person who knew about his disease. Before leaving Holmes asked Watson to put coins in his pocket, keep some letters and place ivory box on the table within his reach. He also asked him light the gas lamp but half on. He asked Watson to persuade Smith and reach home before him and went in another room. When Smith asked about the symptoms to Holmes, he told so on which Smith told him a young man named Victor had same symptoms and died on the fourth. This was where Holmes caught him said that it was Smith who murdered Victor. But Smith didn’t admit and Holmes started pleading him to cure on which he would forget about Victor’s death. Smith then asked about post on which Holmes said that he received a box in which it had sharp spring and it drew blood. This was where Smith said that the ivory box was the last evidence of Victor’s death and he was caught in the trap of Holmes. Inspector Morton came and arrested him on charge of Victor Savage’s murder.
(2) How did Watson help his friend to arrest the criminal?
Answer: Watson was an assistant of Holmes who was called by Holmes’ landlady. He went to see him and wanted to examine his condition but when Holmes didn’t let him examine him he felt dejected. He didn’t he was pretending to be sick. He obeyed him and then he was asked to bring Mr.Smith to home and cure him. Before leaving his home, Watson was asked to arrange certain things like putting coins in his pocket, putting some papers and letters on the table. He asked him to place the ivory box on the table within his reach. All these things were done by Watson.Holmes asked Watson to bring Smith and to return home before him. He then asked to sit in another room and not come until he said. He was completely confused but obeyed him ad wanted to help Holmes like a true friend. After the Smith’s confession and his arrest, it was then Holmes told his reason of being rude to him. In this way, it was because of Watson Holmes’ whole plan worked accordingly.
