Answer very briefly.
1.) Define taxonomy.
Ans:
Taxonomy is the science of classification which makes the study of wide variety of organisms easier. And also help us to understand the relationship among the different group of animals.
2.) What is nematocyst?
Ans:
The Coelenterates are the aquatic animals having muiticellular, radially symmetrical animals with tissue grade of organization. Their body wall is diploblastic with two layers, outer is ectoderm and inner is endoderm. And this layers are separated by non-cellular jelly like substance called as mesoglea, which has a central gastrovascular cavity called as aoelenteron with mouth surrounded by short tentacles. This tentacles bear stinging cells called cnidoblast or nematocyst.
3.) Why coelenterates are called diploblastic animals?
Ans:
Organisms with two germ layers namely the ectoderm and endoderm are called as diploblastic animals. For example: Hydra.
The Coelenterates are called diploblastic animals because, the Coelenterates are the aquatic animals having muiticellular, radially symmetrical animals with tissue grade of organization. Their body wall is diploblastic with two layers, outer is ectoderm and inner is endoderm. And this layers are separated by non-cellular jelly like substance called as mesoglea.
4.) List the respiratory organs of amphibians.
Ans:
Amphibia are the first four legged vertebrates with dual adaptation to live in both land and water. Their body is divided into head and trunk. Their skin is moist and have nucus glands.
The respiratory organs of amphibians are gills, lungs, skin or buccopharynx.
5.) How does locomotion take place in starfish?
Ans:
The starfish belongs to phylum Echinodermata, in which locomotion occurs by tube feet. And body is covered with spiny hard calcareous ossicles.
6.) Are jellyfish and starfish similar to fishes? If no justify the answer.
Ans:
The jellyfish and starfish are not similar to the fishes, although they have some similarities with them. Jellyfish and starfish has lack of brains or skeletons which are marine animals.
The jellyfish belongs to kingdom Animalia, phylum cnidarian and subphylum Medusozoa. And starfish belongs to phylum Echinodermata.
Whereas the fishes belongs to class Pisces.
7.) Why are frogs said to be amphibians?
Ans:
Amphibians are the first four legged vertebrates with dual adaptation to live in both land and water. And frogs also having dual adaptation to live in both land and water.
Hence, frogs said to be amphibians.
Answer briefly.
1.) Give an account on phylum Annelida.
Ans:
- The organisms belonging to phylum Annelida are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic i.e. with three layers namely outer ectoderm, middele mesoderm and inner endoderm. They are the first true coelomate animals with organ system grade of organization.
- Their body is divided externally into segments called metameres which are joined by ring like structures called as annuli.
- It is covered with moist thin cuticle.
- The locomotive organs are setae and parapodia.
- The sexes may be separate or united.
- For example: Nereis, Earthworm, Leech etc.
2.) Differentiate between flat worms and round worms?
Ans:
- The flat worms belongs to the phylum Platyhelminthes while the round worms belongs to the phylum Aschelminthes.
- Flat worms are acoelomate i.e. without body cavity animals while the body cavity of round worms is pseudocoelom.
- Flatworms are parasitic in nature whereas round worms live in water or soil also.
- Flatworms are hermaphrodites having both female and male reproductive organs in a single individual. Whereas the sexes are separate in round worms.
- The body of flatworms is flattened while the body of round worms is round and pointed at the one end.
- The body of roundworms is covered by thin cuticle while the body of flatworms is not covered by cuticle.
- The examples of flatworms are Liverfluke, Tapeworm etc and the round worms are Ascaris, Wuchereria etc.
3.) Outline the flow charts of Phylum Chordata.
Ans: Following chart shows the classification of Phylum Chordata:
4.) List five characteristic features of fishes.
Ans:
- Fishes belongs to the class Pisces, which are cold blooded animals and hence also called as poikilothermic animals. They are aquatic vertebrates with jaws.
- Their streamlined body is divided into head, trunk and tail.
- The locomotion in fishes is by paired and median fins and body is covered with scales.
- They respires through the gills.
- Their heart is two chambered with an auricle and a ventricle.
- There are two types of fishes:
- Cartilaginous fishes: The skeleton of cartilaginous fishes are made of cartilage. For example: Sharks, Skates etc.
- Bony fishes: The skeleton of bony fishes is made of bones. For example: Carps, Mullets etc.
5.) Comment on the aquatic and terrestrial habits of amphibians.
Ans:
Amphibians are the first four legged vertebrates with dual adaptations to live in both water and land.
Their body is divided into head and trunk and skin is moist with mucus glands to live in water also.
The amphibians respires through gills, lungs, skin or buccopharynx in water and on land also.
Their heart is three chambered with two auricles and one ventricle.
They laid eggs in water. The tadpole larva, transforms into an adult.
For example: Frog and Toad are ambhibians which lives in water and on land also.
6.) How are the limbs of the birds adapted for avian life?
Ans:
- Birds are the homeothermic that means warm blooded animals with the several adaptations to fly.
- They have spindle shaped or boat shaped body which is divided into head, neck, trunk and tail.
- The body is covered with feathers.
- Forelimbs are modified into wings for flight.
- Whereas the hindlimbs are adapted for walking, perching or swimming.
- The respiratory organs are lungs which have air sacs.
- Bones are filled with air to reduce the body weight and helps in flying.
- All these adaptations are already present in the birds for avian life.
VII. Answer in detail.
1.) Describe the characteristic features of different Prochordates.
Ans:
Chordates are characterized by the presence of notochord, dorsal nerve cord and paired gill pouches. And it is divided into two groups Prochordates and vertebrates.
The prochordates are considered as the forerunners of vertebrates, which are again classified into subphylum Urochordata and subphylum Cephalochordata on the basis of notochord.
Subphylum Urochordata:
In this subphylum the notochord is present only in the tail region of free living larva.
Adults are sessile forms and mostly degenerate.
Their body is covered with a tunic or test.
For example: Ascidian
Subphylum Cephalochordata:
Cephalochordates are the small fish like marine chordates with the unpaired dorsal fins.
The notochord extends throughout the entire length of the body
For example: Amphioxus.
2) Give an account on phylum Arthropoda.
Ans:
- The arthropod is the largest phylum of the animal kingdom. They are bilaterallysymmetrical, triploblastic and coelomate animals.
- Their body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. And each thorasic segment bears paired jointed legs.
- Their exoskeleton is made up of chitin and is shed periodically with the growth of the animal.
- The casting and regrowing of exoskeleton is called moulting.
- Their body cavity is filled with haemolymph i.e. blood and it does not flow in blood vessels and circulates throughout the body. Hence, they are having open circulatory system.
- They respires through body surface, gills or tracheae in the form of air tubes.
- They excretes through malph tubules or green glands, with their sexes are separate.
For example: the arthropods are Prawn, Crab, Cockroach, Millipede, Spider, Scorpion etc.
