1.) Write about Ahimsa Silk.
Answer : In the traditional method of silk manufacturing the cocoons of the silk worms were boiled and then the threads were sorted out that were used later for silk production. But this was an inhumane method So , in 1992 a government official from Andhra Pradesh named Kusuma Rajaiah proposed a much humane method or Ahimsa way of silk production. In this silk was produced without killing the silkworms. This method involves letting the silkworms to hatch and then the vacant cocoons were used. People interested in the welfare of animals strongly supported this method. It is also known as Peace Silk.
2.) Write about the hazards of silk industry.
Answer: Generally, While reeling the silk into yarn the workers in silk industry have to stand for a long duration of time. So many of them suffer from arthritis. Due to poor ventilated area of their work they may even suffer from respiratory problems like bronchitis and asthma. Some may also develop visionary problem, backpain and skin injuries.
3.) What are the major steps involved in this wool factory.
Answer: The processing of wool involves five major steps :
Shearing:- This involves removal of flesh from the sheep’s body
Grading (or) Sorting:- The fleece of the same sheep may differ from other parts of the body. Fleece of similar nature are then sorted out into Separate piles. This is called Grading or sorting.
Washing (or) Scouting:- Using soap or detergents the sheared skin of sheep is thoroughly washed in order to remove dirt, dust and grease.
Carding:- This involves removal of dried wool. These fibres then passed through the rollers that are covered with fine sheet of thin wire teeth. In this process wool are arranged into flat sheet called a Web.
Spinning:- Spinning involves drawing the web into narrow strands and then passing it through spinning machines. With the help of spinning machines strands are twisted into yarn. The yarn is wound to form balls of wool. This yarn is either weaved into fabric (or) retained for knitting.
4.) Write the uses of the wool.
Answer : Wool is a multifunctional fibre with a range of diameters that makes it apt for clothing, household fabrics and technical textiles. In the manufacture of garments including sweaters, dresses, coats and sportswear two-third of wool is used. Wool is often used as adds drape and crease resistance blankets, anti-static and noise absorbing carpets by blending with other synthetic or natural fibres.
