I.) Choose the correct answer.

1) The unit of measurement used for Expressing dimension (size) of cell is

a.) Centimetre

b) millimetre

c) Micrometre

d) Meter

Answer: Micrometre

Solution: Micrometre that is a million of a meter. Cells are microscopic, they cannot be seen with the naked eye.

2.) Under the microscope Priya observes A cell that has a cell wall and distinct Nucleus. The cell that she observed is

a.) A plant cell

b.) an animal cell

c.) A nerve cell

d.) a bacteria cell

Answer: A plant cell

Solution: Prokaryotic cell doesn’t have a nucleus surrounded by a nuclear Membrane. Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus but in case of animal cell , cell wall is absent.

3.) The ‘control centre’ of the eukaryotic Cell is

a.) Cell wall

b.) Nucleus

c.) Vacuoles

d.) Chloroplast

Answer: Nucleus

Solution: The control center or the brain of the eukaryotic cell is the nucleus.

4.) Which one of the following is not an Unicellular organism?

a.) Yeast

b.) Amoeba

c.) Spirogyra

d.) Bacteria

Answer: Spirogyra

Solution: Unicellular organisms are those made up of a single celled. Spirogyra is a algae that is a multicellular organism.

5.) Most organelles in an eukaryotic cell is Found in the

a.) Cell wall

b.) cytoplasm

c.) Nucleus

d.) Vacuole

Answer: Cytoplasm

Solution: Most organelles in an eukaryotic cell is found in the cytoplasm. It consists of organelles like mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, Lysosomes, Cytoplasmic Vacuoles etc.

II.) Fill in the Blanks

1.)The instrument used to observe the Cell is _microscope____

2.) I take part in food production of a cell. Who am I? _Chloroplast___

3.) I am like a policeman. Who am I __cell wall__?

4.) The Term “ cell” was coined by __Robert Hooke____

5.) The egg of an Ostrich is the ___largest_____ single cell.

III.) True or False. If False, give the Correct answer.

1.) A cell is the smallest unit of life.

Answer: True

2.) Nerve cell is the longest cell.

Answer: True

3.) Prokaryotes were the first form of life On earth.

Answer: True

4.) The organelles of both plants and Animals are made up of cells.

Answer: True

5.) New cells are produced from the Existing cells.

Answer: True

IV.) Match the following

1.) Control center – Cell membrane

2.) Food producer(Plant cell)– Mitochondria

3.) Gate of the nucleus – Nucleus

4.) Gate of the cell – Chloroplasts

5.) Energy producer –              Nuclear Membrane

Answer:

Control center Nucleus
Food producer (plant cell) Chloroplasts
Gate of the nucleus Nuclear Membrane
Gate of the cell Cell membrane
Energy producer Mitochondria

V.) Arrange in a correct sequence

1.) Elephant, Cow, Bacteria, Mango, Rose plant.

Answer: Bacteria, rose plant, mango, cow , elephant

2.) Hen’s Egg, Ostrich’s egg, Insect’s egg.

Answer: Insect’s egg, hen’s egg and ostrich’s egg

VI.) Analogy

1.) Prokaryote : Bacteria :: Eukaryote :_______

Answer: plant cell

2.) Spirogyra : Plant cell :: Amoeba : ______

Answer: Animal cell

3.) Food producer : Chloroplasts :: Power house :____

Answer: Mitochondria

VII.) Give very short answer

1.) Who discovered the cell in 1665?

Answer: Robert Hooke in 1665 discovered the cell.

2.) What type of cells do we have?

Answer: We have eukaryotic cells.

3.) What are the essential components of A cell?

Answer: The essential components of a cell are a cell membrane, a cytoplasm and a nucleus.

4.) What are the organelles found only in Plant cell?

Answer: Organelles that are found only in plants are chloroplasts and cell wall.

5.) Give any three examples of eukaryotic Cell?

Answer: Plants, animals and most of fungi and algae are examples of eukaryotic cells.

6.) Which one is called as “Area of Movement”?

Answer: Cytoplasm is called as Area of movement.

7.) Shiva said “ Bigger onion has larger Cells when compared to the cells of Smaller onion”! Do you agree with his Statement or not ? Explain Why?

Answer: No I don’t agree with the statement. There will be more numbers of cells in the larger onion as compared to the smaller one but apart from that there will be no difference in the size of a cell.

VIII.) Give short answer

1.) Why cells are called building blocks of Life?

Answer: All Living organisms are made of cells. Cells are known to be the basic structural and functional unit of life. Therefore they are called the building blocks of life.

2.) Identify any four parts of the Plant cell.

Answer: Four parts of the plant cell are Golgi apparatus, chloroplast, Nucleus and nucleolus.

3.) Distinguish between prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells

Answer:

Prokaryotic cell Eukaryotic cell
Membrane bound organelles are absent. Membrane bound organelles are present.
It has a diameter that ranges from 1-2 micron. It has a diameter that ranges from 10-100 micron.
Nuclear Membrane  does not surrounds the nucleus. Nuclear Membrane surrounds the true nucleus.
Nucleolus is absent. Nucleolus is present.

4.) Make sketches of animal and plant cells Which you observe under microscope.

Answer:

5.) Write about the contribution of Robert Hooke in cell biology.

Answer: Robert Hooke was an inventor and a scientist. His contribution to cell biology was marked by his improvements made to the existing microscope. He made changes like that of a compound microscope. He added thin sections of the cork and with the help of the his microscope, observed many small identical chambers in it, that were hexagonal in shape. On the basis of this, in 1665 , he published his book called Micrographia , where he used the word “cell” for the first time.

IX.) Answer in detail

1.)Tabulate any five cell organelles and Their function.

Answer:

S. no Cell component Functions
1. Nucleus It helps in regulating the activities of the cell . Also called the brain of the cell.
2. Cell wall It helps in protecting and surrounding the cell, making it strong and stiff.
3. Mitochondria It supplies energy to the cell.
4. Cell membrane It helps in regulating the movement of materials of the cell. It also protects the cell.
5. Chloroplasts It has a green pigment called chlorophyll. It helps in the production of food Through the process of photosynthesis.
