I.) Choose the correct answer

1.) Pond is an example of ____________ Ecosystem.

a) Marine

b) Freshwater

c) Deserts

d) Mountain

Answer: Freshwater ecosystem

Solution: The size of a pond vary as compared to ocean, which is an example of marine ecosystem.

2.) The important function of stomata is ____________.

a) Conduction

b) Transpiration

c) Photosynthesis

d) Absorption

Answer: Photosynthesis

Solution: Stomata are tiny pores or openings present in the lower side of a leaf. They help in the process of photosynthesis.

3.) Organ of absorption is ____________

a) Root

b) Stem

c) Leaf

d) Flower

Answer: Root

Solution: Root is an organ of absorption. Stem , leaf and flowers are parts of the process of transpiration.

4.) The habitat of water hyacinth is

a) Aquatic

b) Terrestrial

c) Desert

d) Mountain

Answer: Aquatic

Solution: Water hyacinth belongs to the fresh water habitat of aquatic habitat. It is an aquatic plant with stem and leaves having air chambers that allow them to float in water.

II.) Fill in the blanks

1.) Earth’s surface is covered by ____70_____ % of water.

2.) The driest places on the Earth are __deserts_______.

3.) Fixation and absorption are the main Functions of ___roots____.

4.) Primary organs of photosynthesis are ___leaves_____.

5.) Taproot system is present in __dicotyledonous____ plants.

III.) State True or False. If False correct the statement.

1.) Plants can live without water.

Answer: False , water is needed by every living thing to survive, otherwise they’ll die.

2.) All plants have chlorophyll.

Answer: True

3.) Plants have three parts: the root, the Stem and leaves.

Answer: False, parts of plant include– root, stem, leaves and flowers.

4.) Mountain is an example for freshwater Habitat.

Answer: False, Mountain is an example of terrestrial Habitat.

5.) Root is modified into spines.

Answer: False, leaves and stem are modified into spines.

6.) Green plants need sunlight.

Answer: True

IV.) Match the following.

1.)  Mountain –                                     a.) Monocot

2.) Desert –                                            b.) Branches

3.) Stem –                                              c.) Dry place

4.) Photosynthesis –                            d.) Himalayas

5.) Fibrous root –                                e.) Leaves

Answer:

1) Mountain –.                                   a) Himalayas

2) Desert–.                                         b) Dry place

3) Stem –.                                          c) Branches

4) Photosynthesis–.                            d) Leaves

5) Fibrous root–.                               e)  Monocot

V.) Arrange the following in correct Sequence.

1.) Leaf – Stem – Root – Flower

Answer: Root–stem–leaf–flower

2.) Transpiration – Conduction – Absorption – Fixation

Answer: Fixation–absorbtion–conduction–transpiration

VI.) Answer very briefly.

1.) Classify the plants on the basis of their Habitats.

Answer: There are 2 types of Habitats:

a) Aquatic habitat- include plants such as water hyacinth, Lotus, Marine algae, sea grasses etc.

b) Terrestrial habitat- include plants in every green forest, cactus, aloe, grasses etc.

2.) Mention few desert plants.

Answer: Cactus, Agave, Aloe, Bryophyllum etc are few desert plants.

3.) Define the term habitat.

Answer: Habitat can be defined as places where living organisms live and reproduce.

4.) Relate the terms leaves and Photosynthesis.

Answer: Photosynthesis is a process through which plants prepare their food and this process takes place with the help of Leaves.

VII.) Answer briefly.

1.) Why do we call jasmine plant, a Twiner?

Answer: Twiners are plants with weak stem that needs support to stand and survive.

2.) Compare the taproot and fibrous root Systems.

Answer:  Taproot system refers to the growing of a straight single root down into the ground. Here lateral roots arises from the main root. For example- mango

On the other hand, from the base of the stem a cluster of roots arises , all thin and of uniform size. This is called the fibrous root system. For example – grass , maize

3.) Distinguish between terrestrial and Aquatic habitats.

Answer: Aquatic Habitats refer to places covered or even surrounded by water. This habitat is further divided into freshwater and marine water habitat. The presence of air chambers in the stem and Leaves of aquatic plants allow them to float in water. Example – Water hyacinth, Lotus, Marine algae, sea grasses etc.

Terrestrial Habitat refers places found on land. This include Forest, grassland and desert habitat, also man made habitats like city, Town and farms. Forests are areas that are largely covered by trees. Example – tropical forest. While grasses dominate the vegetation of grassland, for example– savanna grassland . Desert habitat are places with dry hot sand and lack of water. Here plants have thick leaves to store water in them. And have roots longer in size to go deeper into the soil in search of water. Example– cactus, aloe, etc.

4.) List out the plants present in your School garden.

Answer: Devil’s ivy, roses, lilies, Aloe Vera, spider plant, Persian shield, shrubs etc.

VIII.) Answer in detail.

1.) Make a list of the functions of root and Stem.

Answer: Root–

  • It helps plant to get fixed into the soil.
  • Water and minerals are absorbed by the roots from the soil.
  • There are plants that store food in root like carrot and beetroot.

Stem–

  • Water and minerals from the root are transported to upper areas of the plant.
  • Branches, leaves, flower and fruits get support from the stem.
  • Food prepared from leaves are transported to other parts of the plant.
  • Food is stored in stem, as in the case of sugarcane.
