RS Aggarwal Class 6 Math Ninth Chapter Linear Equation In One Variable Exercise 9A Solution
EXERCISE 9A
(1) Write each of the following statements as an equation:
(i) 5 times a number equals 40.
Ans: 5x = 40
(ii) A number increased by 8 equals 15.
Ans: x + 8 = 15
(iii) 25 exceeds a number by 7.
Ans: 25 – x = 7
(iv) A number exceeds 5 by 3.
Ans: x – 5 = 3
(v) 5 subtracted from thrice a number is 16.
Ans: 3x – 5 = 16
(vi) If 12 is subtracted from a number, the result is 24.
Ans: x – 12 = 24
(vii) Twice a number subtracted from 19 is 11.
Ans: 19 – 2x = 11
(viii) A number divided by 8 gives 7.
Ans: x8=7
(ix) 3 less than 4 times a number is 17.
Ans: 4x – 3 = 17
(x) 6 times a number is 5 more than the number.
Ans: 6x = x + 5
(2) Write a statement for each of the equations, given below:
(i) x-7=14
Ans: 7 less from the number x is 14.
(ii) 2y=18
Ans: Twice the number y is 18.
(iii) 11+3x=17
Ans: 11 increased by thrice the number x is 17.
(iv) 2x-3=13
Ans: 3 less from twice the number x is 13.
(v) 12y-30=6
Ans: 12 times the number y decreased by 30 is 6.
vi x3=4
Ans: Twice the number z divided by 3 is 8.
(3) Verify by substitution that
(i) The root of 3x-5=7 is x=4
Solution: L. H. S: 3x-5
=3×4-5
=12-5
=7=R.H.S (proved)
(ii) The root of 3+2x=9 is x=3
Solution: L. H, S: 3+2x
=3+2×3
=3+6
=9 R.H.S (proved)
(iii) The root of 5x-8=2x-2 is x=2
Solution: L.H.S: 5x-8
=5×2-8
=10-8
=2
R.H.S: 2x-2
=2×2-2
=4-2
=2
L.H.S = R.H.S (proved)
(iv) The root of 8-7y=1 is y=1
Solution: L.H.S: 8-7y
=8-7×1
=8-7
=1=R.H.S (proved)
(4) Solve each of the following equations by the trial-and-error method:
(i) y+9=13
Solution: y+9=13
or, y=13-9
or, y=4
(ii) x-7=10
Solution: x-7=10
or, x=10+7
or, x=17
(ix) 2y+4=3y
Solution: 2y+4=3y
or, 3y-2y=4
or, y=4
(x) z-3=2z-5
Solution: z-3=2z-5
or, 2z-z=-3+5
or, z=2
