Root

The part or organ of a plant that is present below the soil are called as roots. They are present below the soil that means roots are underground. Root is the major organ of plant, and therefore it performs various functions or roles.

Functions of Root

  • Root absorb water and minerals from the soil : From the soil water, nutrients and vitamins taken by roots.
  • Storage of water and nutrients :These absorbed nutrients and water are stored by the roots for future use.
  • Anchorage of plant : Roots play an important role by making a strong contact between soil and plant.

Every plant don’t have similar type of roots, so the roots are mainly divided into 2 types :

1.) Tap roots

2.) Fibrous roots

As we can see in diagram the difference between tap root and fibrous root.

Tap roots are grows vertically deep down the soil, therefore they are deep rooted and gives nourishment to the plant. For example : Mango, rose, neem tree.

Fibrous rootsare hair like, fine, delicate root, they are short lived and not very deeply rooted. For example : Rice, wheat and corn.
