Restoration and Preservation of Indian Monuments Essay : Indian monuments were constructed hundreds of years ago and its breathtaking views enthralls all the tourists across the globe. India has a rich cultural heritage to boast of and it is a storehouse of marvelous monuments. The Indian architecture is well portrayed in the form of monuments that needs to restored for the future generations to embrace.  The monument represents the legacy of civilizations but sadly there are few monuments that has not yet been restored by the government. Historical monuments of India reflect the history of India and for this reason Indian government tries its best restore and preserve the monuments from a variety of issue. At international levels organizations such as UNESCO aims to save all the historical monuments of all the world.

Archaeological survey of India: 

The Archaeological Survey of India is responsible for the security of the cultural heritage of the country.  It directs the archaeological activities of the country according to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958.  The archaeological association has conservatists, archaeologist, draftsman, epigraphists, and researchers that help in the monument’s reservation and preservation.

Restoration techniques:

  1. Structural conservation refers to the process of making the foundations strong and this also helps the monuments to be resistant against the natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. It also involves the removal of necessary vegetation from the premises thus helping to contributes to the aesthetic value of the monuments. The Taj Mahal, Red fort, Tomb at Sikandar and Sanchi Stupa are few of the monuments that have undergone structural conservation to restore the legacy and beauty.
  2. Chemical Preservation refers to the protection of monuments from inorganic and organic gases such as carbon monoxide, sulphuric acid and nitric acid. It also helps to eliminate algae, lichens and mosses that breeds on the walls of the monuments. Pesticides such as Xylophene and DDT is used to clean the buildings that prevents the moss from growing.  Brick dust, mortar mixture and slaked lime is used for cleaning terracotta objects.

Need for restoration and preservation:

Monuments are a treasure for our country and they reflect the pride of the civilization. They help us to appreciate our past and the thoughts knowledge and development of the civilization.  They serve as a vital source off evidence    of history and thus they help in attracting tourists.  So, it is very important to preserve the monuments from natural weathering, terrorist attacks, irresponsible local citizens and visitors who do not value the importnce of the monuments.
