Punctuation for Class 6 English Grammar:
* Punctuation means the right use of putting in points or stops in writing. The main marks used are,
- (i) Full stops (.)
- (2) Comma (,)
- (3) Semicolon (;)
- (4) Colon (:)
- (5) Question mark (?)
- (6) Exclamation mark (!)
* There are some other marks used in common. They are, Dash (-), Brackets (), inverted commas (“ ”), question marks “ ”
* The full stops is the greatest pause. It is used to end a sentence. The full stop is used only in declarative or imperative sentences.
* Full stops are also used in abbreviations, such as M.A, Mr. Das, U.N.O etc.
* Comma (,) is used when we give a small pause in our sentence, or to separate a serious of words in the same sentence.
For eg – (i) among fruits mango, banana, watermelon, pineapple are my favourite.
(ii) It was a very long, tiring journey.
* To mark off words used in addressing people
– (i) come with me, Peter
(ii) How do you do, Madan?
The semicolon (;)
* The semicolon represents a pause of greater importance than the comma (,).
* To separate the parts of a compound sentences, when they have a comma.
For eg –Her court was pure; her life peaceful; god gave her peace; & she dwelt in happiness.
The colon (:)
* The colon is sometimes used with a dash (-)
For eg – Bacon says:- “Writing makes an exact man, speaking makes a ready man”
* Before enumeration or mentioning a list of thing one after another.
For eg – The 3 types of tenses are: present tense, past tense & Future tense.
The question mark (?)
* It is used instead of full stop in interrogative sentence.
For eg – Have you finished eating?
The exclamation mark (!) The exclamation mark is used after exclamatory sentence, sad emotion, wish etc.
For eg – Alas! We lost the match.
Hurry! We won the trophy.
Inverted commas – (“ ”) – It is used to mention the exact words of a speaker.
For eg – He exclaimed, “I would rather die for my country”.
* If a quotation occurs in between a quotation it is marked by single inverted commas.
For eg – He exclaimed, “that I like what I get’ is the same as ‘I get what I like”.
The Dash – Is used to indicate an adrupt stop.
For eg – Ram is alive – Why to fear about problem?
The Hyphen – A shouter line than the dash – it is used to join the parts of a compound words.
For eg– Passer – by, man-of-words.
