Exercise 1
Fill in the blanks with suitable Determiners:
(i) Jack was seven years old. His sister Jill was one year old. Their house was on a hill. Jack and Jill were playing with a ball. The ball rolled down the hill. Jack ran after it. Jill rolled down after Jack. There was a road at the foot of the hill. The ball stopped there.
(ii) When Edison was 12 years old, he becamea newsboy on the train that left Port Huron in the evening. Edison set up a laboratory in the baggage car of the train because he did not want to waste the time. Later he bought a printing press and set it up in his laboratory on wheels. He published a weekly paper, which he sold for three cents a copy. At the same time Edison spent some of his free hours reading in a Public Library.
(iii) The old man was left with only a little money in the bank. He didn’t spend on himself. He wanted to save a little for his rainy days. None of his three sons bothered to care for him. He didn’t want to be dependent on any of them, either.

Read the following passage. There is an error in each line. Underline the error and write your correction in the space provided:
There lived a poor weaver in a village. He had a daughter who was always lost in her day dreams. One day she was walking along a road. She had a basket of eggs on her head. She began to dream of the riches she would earn. Suddenly a cow hit her. Her basket of eggs fell down on the road. The eggs were broken. She started crying.

“You can wear some fresh flowers” he suggested. But she was not convinced.
“Why don’t you ask your friend, Mrs. Forestier, to lend you some jewellery?” he suggested.
She at once went to her friend’s house and returned home with a lovely necklace. She attended the ball and was a great success.
