Mr.Sharma went to bazaar and brought some honey from a shop. The shopkeeper gave him the honey. When Mr.Sharma was coming back, he saw some girls who were playing in the ground. Some of them were looking very pretty. The girls were wearing beautiful clothes. Mr. Sharma was happy to see the girls in a joyful mood.
Exercise 2
In my last summer vacation I went to a historical place. It was a very beautiful place. All of the members of my family went along with me. My father was very fond of visiting that place. We didn’t face any difficulty there because we had visited that place many a time.

Our class teacher organized her birthday at her home. Only a few girls were present in the party. I bought an umbrella as a gift for her as I had only a small amount of money with me. Our class teacher was wearing a saree. She was looking very beautiful in that attire. We had never seen her in that type of attire earlier. All of the girls wished her a long life. I have a friend who looks as stupid as an owl. I tried to bring herto senses many times but she is a hard nut to crack. She likes the way she is lives. A poor peasant went off very early in the morning to plough. He saw no one. Yet someone had certainly been there. He lost his piece of bread. It was an imp who had stolen the bread. The imp went to the devil, his master. The peasant spoke angrily to his wife. This pleased the devil even more. The devil praised the imp and forgave him. The next year, the imp advised the peasant to sow on the hill.

My grandmother was an old lady. My parents left me with her. She clasped me in her arms. She sang songs for me and told me many stories. I liked the way she spoke. I acted upon the advice she gave to me. She used to sit in an old porch in her house. All the villagers approached whenever they had any problem. She tried to solve their problems.

Rosie sat on a bench in garden. She was dressed in an eye-catching attire. An elderly gentleman sat by her side. It was a pleasant afternoon. The birds were chirping in the garden. She heard the beautiful songs of a nightingale. The scene pleased her and harmonized with her mood. After some time her place on the bench was taken by someone else. She asked him to leave the place but he did not listen to her appeal.

1.2 Prepositions
Exercise 1
The dowry system degenerated into an evil custom. It became necessary for the parents of girlsto give a good dowry to their daughters. The married life of a girl depended on the size of the dowry. A successful and happy married life became impossible in the absence of a handsome dowry. Newspapers are full of reports carrying tales of brides being burnt to death or driven to hang themselves because of constant nagging by their in-laws.
Exercise 2
Cricket is a game known for its wonderful glories. It is popular among men and women of all ages. People used to go to see a cricket match in thousands. They used to see a match for five days. Many a time, the match would end in a draw. But things have changed with the introduction of one-day matches. This kind of cricket has certainly caught the fancy of the people. There is no need to wait for five days now for the outcome of the match. A match is now decided on the same day.
Exercise 3
In modern times, books are being published in very large numbers on all subjects under the sun. It is not possible for a man to read all of them. Reading gives us a lot of pleasure. Books delight and educate at the same time. The Gita gives us a message of universal brotherhood. It tells us that a man should go on doing his duty without worrying about the results.
Exercise 4
It is in the very nature of adversity to bring out the best in man, develop his latent abilities and lead him to a path of prosperity and progress. The history of the world is the story of the survival of the fittest. In the course of time, man, through his heroic struggle against the adverse circumstances, came out of the forest, changed the face of the universe and landed on the moon.

Mr. Blacksmith is known to me. Once we met in a garden. From there, he took me to his apartment. I was astonished to see his capabilities as a journalist. I just had a look at his face. He was trying to prove his position. He was really a man of letters but unfortunately he was blind in one eye. I looked at the portrait of a lady hanging on the wall. I went to take a round of his house and I saw a family photograph. Mr. Blacksmith was sitting with his wife and son in the photograph. After spending some time with him, I came back home.

Life is not a bed of roses but a bed of thorns. Those who understand the reality of life are winners, not losers. One has to go through a lot of trials and tribulationsin taking a right decision or for making a right choice. God has given us tremendous power to think and decide. But most of us are ignorant of our capabilities. We should not underestimate ourselves and move of the destination without any doubts or fears. This behaviour will lead us to greater heights.
Exercise 7
Translation is an art. Good translation is the result of practice and patience. It requires skill to translate words and ideas of one language into another. Literal translation of a sentence sometimes spoils the spirit of the language and sounds funny. One should translate words and ideas with precision. It is essential to be equally well-versed in both the languages.

Positive thoughts are the wings ofsuccess. One should always look at the positive side oflife. We should not let negative thoughts come in our mind. Everybody should have this approach oflife. Always hope for the best and believe in God. He is always there to take care ofHis children. God is too great to ask for the price ofthe gifts He has bestowed upon us.

First and foremostof the blessings of civilization are order and safety. We should not quarrel with each other. In disputes between man and man, right has taken the place of might. Law protects us from robbery and violence. Nobody can come and break into our house, steal our goods or run off with our children. Many of us act without thinking. This habit has injured the feelings of many and has turned friends into enemies.
Exercise 10
Dreams have been the topic of discussion among men for centuries. The fact cannot be denied that dreams are far from reality but at the same time, they open up before us a facet of our personality of which we did not know earlier. Dreams take us to a world which is more like a Utopia. Some people are in the habit of day-dreaming. They find themselves lost in dreams most of the time. One must not blind oneself from the reality.

The secret of a successful marriage is how we understand and believe each other. Those who involve themselves from litigations are far from understanding the true meaning of marriage. As the time is changing, the divorce ratio is at the increase. Divorce is looked upon as an evil in our society.Successful marriage depends on cooperation and adjustment. The Government should take strict action against those who deliberately try to spoil the happiness of their better halves. The need of the hour is to acquaint the people with norms of our culture. These days a lot of social organizations are coming forward to settle the disputes between husbands and wives.

Paul’s family led a life of tension and anxiety. It was because the family always tried to keep with a high standard of living. In their house, there was always shortage of money.Paul wanted to bring luck back in the family. Once he thought to go on harrowing as the expenses also went up. In fact, the more we have the more we want to have. There is no end to expenditure. We cannot have control on expenditure. The evil has to come to an end!

We belong to a country which is known for its traditions and cultures. Our is a country of Buddha, Guru Nanak and Mahatma Gandhi. Conjunctions
Exercise 1
When I was young, I used to travel a lot. But now I am old and it is difficult for me to show as much zeal as I had in my youth. While I can still do many things, there are certain things which are beyond my reach now.
Exercise 2
No sooner did I reach the station than the train left. I do not know how it happened with me. When I narrated the incident to my mother, she was disappointed to hear it. While I was coming back to my house, I met a stranger who was carrying a basket with him. I tried to talk to him but he gave no response.
Exercise 3
Music is said to be food for the soul. Not only does it give relaxation to our mind, but also helps us to forget our sorrows and worries of day-to-day life. There is no aspect of life where we do not find it. There is hardly any party or function where music is not played. But we must enjoy it to forget our pains for some time.

Education has become a part of everybody’s life. There is not even a single field where education has not left its mark. The day is not far when everybody would like to drink deep in its ocean. One day when I went to my friend’s house, I was surprised to see a man who was wearing nothing. When I asked him the reason, he tried to avoid me, but I did not stop and asked him again. After some time, he told me the reason behind it. While he was telling me a sad episode which had happened with him two days agostarted weeping when I heard his woeful tale.
Exercise 6
The economic condition of a country depends on the resources available in the country as well as on its population. When the population increases, resources start decreasing. Sothere is a need to control population if we want our country to move towards the path of development.

I was pained to hear about your problem, but you should not worry because I am always there to help you. Though my means are limited, I will try to help you as much as I can. If you want to progress in life, you should have faith in your capabilities and aspirations.

As far as my knowledge is concerned, I can only say that nowadays, it has become difficult to make both ends meet. I was seven years old when my mother died. I tried to put a lot of efforts so that I might get what I desired in my life. My sister and I started running a shop which was situated near our house. My sister and I managed the shop. Though we had limited means, we were honest.
Exercise 9
When I was nine years old, my parents told me that we originally belonged to Kashmir. As I grew up, I began to watch TV so that I learnt about the happenings in Kashmir Whenever I saw some beautiful shots of the heavenly valley on the TV or in movies, I would remember Kashmir.

My friend had been suffering from cholera since Monday. Today he did not come to school as he was not well again. I reached his house, his family had left for the hospital. I hurriedly rushed towards the hospital where he had been admitted. The doctor came and assured us about his early recovery. We heaved a sigh of relief when we heard the news of his recovery.
Exercise 11
When I feel lonely, I prefer to enjoy the beauty of nature. Wordsworth was a famous poet who wrote poems on the beautiful objects of nature. Some of his poems show the zeal that he had in his veins. When I was at school, my English teacher used to tell me about some of Wordsworth’s poems that were worth reading.
Exercise 12
If you do not get success despite your repeated efforts, you should not lose heart. Only those people get success who have an optimistic approach towards life. If you want to win the lost game, you should not feel exhausted. You can go up in life if you persist in your efforts.
Exercise 13
No sooner did we step out of the house than the rain started. I love rainy season because in that season, my grandmother prepares lovely dishes for the whole family. I enjoy sitting alone while it is raining. If somebody comes to my house on a rainy day, I feel disturbed.
Exercise 14
The incident that changed me was the death of my grandfather. Whatever he ate was flushed out of his system immediately. One morning, while reciting his prayers, he passed away. I can never forget the day on which my grandfather died. When I was a child, he used to tell me stories before going to bed. Even today, I have not come out of the grief that engulfed me six years back.
Exercise 15
When a certain Minister grew old, his hair fell off and he became bald. As he was vain, he wore a wig of someone else’s hair and went out. While he was rushing out of Parliament one day, there was a gust of wind. His wig fell off and exposed his bald pate. When everyone saw this, they started laughing at him.
