On this page we have given ICSE Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 12 Case Study based questions – Organic Chemistry. From 2024 Board exam, ICSE will focus on Technical Based, Analytical Based and Critical Questions in Chemistry Exam. So we Net Ex, has started giving Case Study based questions which is also known as Paragraph Based Questions.

Que No. 1 –

Lab. preparation of ethyne (acetylene)

Refer above figure and answer the following questions

1.) From the above figure write the reaction for preparation of ethyne.

2.) What are the impurities present in the acetylene gas ?

3.) What happens when the flask contains air ?

4.) Write the following Physical Properties of Ethyne :

1) Boiling point

2) Colour and Odor

3) Liquefied temperature

Que No. 2 –

A compound X when treated with an organic acid Y (having vinegar like smell) in the presence of the acid Z forms a compound P which has a fruity smell.

1.) Identify X, Y and Z.

2.) Write structural formula of X and Y.

3.) Name the above reaction.

4.) What is the role of Z ?

Answers

Que No. 1 Answers-

1.) CaC2 + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2+ C2H2

Calcium carbide Calcium hydroxide acetylene

2.) Impurities like phosphine, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and arsine are formed along with ethyne due to the contamination of calcium sulphide and calcium phosphide in calcium carbide.

3.) Flask should not contain air as ethyne forms an explosive mixture with air. The air of the flask is displaced with oil or some inert gas.

4.) Physical Properties of Ethyne :

1) Boiling point = -75 °C

2) Colour and Odor – Colorless and sweet odor

3) Liquefied temperature = -84 °C

Que No. 2 Answers-

1.) X – Ethanol

Y – Acetic acid

Z – Conc. H2SO4

2.) The structural formula of

X – C2H5OH

Y – CH3COOH

3.) The reaction is known as reaction of esterification.

4.) Z is Conc. Sulphuric acid and it acts like a catalyst and Reversible reaction may be prevented by using this catalyst.
