A noun in a sentence is a name, place, idea, an animal or a thing. It specified any name given to anything mentioned above.
Example: – 1. Vikram is watering the plants in the garden.
Here, Vikram is a noun as it shows the name of a person.
Types of Noun
There are many types of noun present in English language. Each noun plays a significant role. The types of noun are:-
1.) Common nouns
A common noun in a sentence is a name given commonly to a person, place, animal or a thing of the same kind.
Examples: –
1.) This is my favorite dress. (Thing)
Here, dress is a thing so it is a common noun.
2.) A moneylender is a person who lends money. (Person)
Here, moneylender is a person so it is a common noun.
3.) My brother is playing in the garden. (Person, place)
Here, brother is a person and garden is a place so it is a common noun.
2.) Proper nouns
A proper noun in a sentence is a name of particularly or a particular a person, animal, place or a thing.
Examples: –
1.) Vikram is the caretaker of the zoo. (person, place)
Here, Vikram is a name of a person and zoo is a place that is particularly mentioned above so it is a proper noun.
2.) I have a dogwhose name is Runjhun. (animal)
Here, Runjhun is a name of a dog which is particularly mentioned so it is a proper noun.
3.) Ahmedabad is known as merchant city of India. (place)
Here, Ahmedabad is a place particularly mentioned above so it is a proper noun.
3.) Collective nouns
A collective noun in a sentence is a word/name given to a collection or a group of anything such as animal, people or a thing as whole which is present in a singular form.
Examples:-
1.) There is a herd of elephant roaming around trees.
Here, herd is being mentioned which is collectively a word so it is a collective noun.
2.) A crowd of people gathered during Diwali at a single shop.
Here, crowd is collectively a word so it is a collective noun.
3.) A shepherd is seen with a flock of sheep.
Here, flock is a word which collectively shows a group or collection so it is a collective noun.
4.) Concrete nouns
A concrete noun in a sentence is a thing which can be felt or one can experience it with five senses such as touch, smell, see, hear or taste.
Examples: –
1.) I use ginger to make tea.
Here, ginger is a thing which is used to taste by someone so it is a concrete noun.
2.) White shoes looks cool with black jeans.
Here, shoes and jeans is a concrete noun because one can see it with eyes.
3.) The remote is on the couch.
Here, remote and couch is a concrete noun because one can see it with eyes.
5.) Abstract nouns
An abstract noun in a sentence is a noun which cannot be felt or experienced, it is something which has no existence in real world.
Examples:-
1.) Ratna always tells false facts to the class.
Here, false is an abstract noun because false is a thing which cannot be feel by a person.
2.) A mother always protects her child from danger.
Here, protects cannot be feel by hands or legs it has no existence in real world.
3.) Neha is an emotional person.
Here, emotional word cannot be touch or feel by someone so it is an abstract noun.
6.) Countable nouns
A countable noun in a sentence is which one can count or is countable in numbers.
Examples: –
1.) There are five apples in the basket.
Here, five is a number which is countable so it is a countable noun.
2.) Ten notebooks are enough to complete one semester.
Here, ten and one both are countable (a person can count) so it is a countable noun.
3.) I have two bottles of water.
Here, two is a number which is countable so it is a countable noun.
7.) Uncountable nouns
An uncountable noun in a sentence is which one cannot count or is impossible to count.
Examples: –
1.) A cup of tea is enough to start a day.
Here, tea cannot be counted by any person so it is an uncountable noun.
2.) Jam is a good combination to eat with bread.
Here, Jam is a thing which cannot be count so it is uncountable noun.
3.) Yesterday my mother brought a jar of honey.
Here, honey is a thing which cannot be count so it is uncountable noun.
8.) Compound nouns
A compound noun in a sentence is which are made up of two or more than two nouns or words.
Examples: –
1.) Seafood is famous in east of India.
here, seafood word is made from two different words (sea + food) so it is a compound noun.
2.) I use toothpaste to brush my teeth.
Here, toothpaste is made from two different words (tooth + paste) so it is a compound noun.
3.) I had a haircut before Diwali.
Here, haircut is made from two different words (hair + cut) so it is a compound noun.
9.) Singular nouns
A singular noun in a sentence is specified with a single or one place, thing or animal.It shows single number of anything.
Examples: –
1.) There is a monkey eating banana on a tree.
Here, monkey is a singular noun because there is only one monkey.
2.) A sailor is important on a ship.
Here, ship is a singular noun because there is only one ship.
3.) Don’t sit on the table.
Here, table is a singular noun because there is only one table.
10.) Plural nouns
A plural noun in a sentence is which are in two or more than two numbers.
Example: –
1.) I love cats.
Here, cats are a plural noun because there is more than one cat.
2.) Dogs are very loyal.
Here, dogs are a plural noun because there is more than one dog.
3.) Babies love to disturb their parent at night.
Here, babies are a plural noun because there is more than one baby.
