1.) Select and read sentences that show

  • The boy is tempted to eat jalebis

Answer:Jalebis are meant to be eaten and only those with money in their pocket can eat them.

But then, these jalebis are no common sort of jalebis

either. They’re crisp, fresh and full of sweet syrup.

My mouth watered,

Thoroughly fed up, I rushed out of the house barefoot and ran towards the bazaar.

  • That he is feeling guilty

Answer:My head started to spin.

I tucked my bag under my arm and left the school and simply followed my nose, walking on and on…

Now for the crime of eating a few jalebis, for the first time in my life I was absent from school,

Sitting there under the tree, at first I felt like crying.

  • That he is justifying a wrong deed

Answer:I have memorised the entire namaaz.

I even know the last ten surats of the Quran by heart.

I didn’t eat them all by myself, though I fed them to a whole lot of children too,

2.) Discuss the following points.

1.) Is the boy intelligent? If so, what is the evidence of it?

Answer: Yes the boy was intelligent. He had got scholarship from which he was supposed to get money. And he had never been absent from the school before. He does feel guilty for what he did but defends himself very well.

2.) Does his outlook on the jalebis episode change after Class VIII? Does he see that episode in a new light?

Answer:Yes, his outlook changed after the jabeli episode. Until Class VIII he thought what harm it could have possibly caused anyone if god had helped him by sending four rupees. Later he realized that what Alllah Miyan did was right, because if he keeps providing everything a man asks for then man would rely on him and live life in nests like vultures and crows and would not learn the art of making jalebis. This in other words also means that the man would not take any efforts andjust rely on god for all the things.

3.) Why are coins made to ‘talk’ in the story? What purpose does it serve?

Answer: The coins in the story are symbolic. They represent the man’s inner voice. We have certain conflicts and confusion in life that leads us to take wrong decisions. In the story too, the boy was honest and never disobeyed his parents but his inner voice misled him and made him take a wrong decision.
