Comprehension Check
1.) Velu stood on the platform but he felt “as if he was still on a moving train”. Why?
Answer: Velu was a small boy who left his house and came to Chennai. He was tired and his legs were unsteady. Even after the train stopped, he could not believe it and felt that he was still on a moving train.
2.) What made him feel miserable?
Answer: Velu was a just an eleven years old boy who left his home and came to Chennai. He didn’t have anything to eat and was tired due to the journey. He ate just peanuts and a piece of jaggery in his journey, all these made him feel miserable.
3.) (i) Velu travelled without a ticket. Why?
Answer: Velu’s father snatched all the money that was earned by him and his sister. This is why he had no money when he left his home and travelled without a ticket.
(ii) How did he escape the ticket collector’s attention?
Answer: Velu travelled in an unreserved compartment and there the collector didn’t go. This made Velu escape the ticket collector’s attention.
4.) Why had Velu run away from home?
Answer: Velu’s father was a drunkard and snatch all the money earned by his children. He was a torture to them. Velu could not take it anymore and ran away from home.
5.) Why did he decide to follow the ‘strange’ girl?
Answer: At the platform Velu met a ‘strange girl’ who said she would get him food. Velu already felt miserable and the girl offered him help so he thought to follow the girl as she would give him food.

1.) Can Velu read Tamil and English? How do you know?
Answer: When Velu looked up at the huge signboards that was written in English, he could not understand a word. But when they were walking, he noticed a Tamil sign which was of Central Jail. Velu could read Tamil but not English.
2.) “If you are not careful, you will soon be counting bars there,” the girl said.
(i) What is she referring to?
Answer: The girl was referring to the Central Jail.
(ii) What does she mean when she says “If you are not careful…”? (She says something a little later which means the same. Find that sentence.)
Answer: She advised him not to anything that would land him in trouble and be careful.
“You don’t have to do anything. Just don’t get caught,
that’s all.”- This sentence gives the same meaning.
3.) (i) Where did the girl lead Velu to?
Answer: The girl led Velu behind a wedding hall where there was a big garbage bin overflowing with rubbish
(ii) What did they get to eat?
Answer: She picked up a squashy banana and vada from the leftover to eat.
4.) What work did she do? Think of a one-word answer.
Answer: Rag-picker

1.) (i) What material are the ‘strange’ huts made out of?
Answer: The huts were made out of metal sheets, tyres, bricks, wood and plastic.
(ii) Why does Velu find them strange?
Answer: Velu had never seen such strange huts before and in his village the houses were made of mud and palm leaves. This was the first time he saw such kind of huts and found it strange.
2.) What sort of things did Jaya and children like her collect and what did they do with those things?
Answer: Jaya and children like her were rag-pickers who would collect things like paper, plastic, glass and sell it to Jam Bazaar Jaggu.
3.) Is Velu happy or unhappy to find work? Give a reason for your answer.
Answer: Velu used to work in landowner’s farm. Velu found Jaya’s work to be strange and didn’t wish to do it. But he had no option but to accept it until he found other work.
Exercise
1.) Is Velu a smart boy? Which instances in the text show that he is a or isn’t?
Answer: Velu was an eleven year old boy who ran away from his home to get rid of his father’s torture. When he came in Chennai he meta girl namedJaya who was a rag-picker and she asks him to work with her as a rag-picker. For an eleven year old boy it is hard to decide what to do and thus he accepts the job until he finds the next one. These different situations show that initially he is not a smart boy but afterwards he becomes one.
2.) Do you think Jaya is a brave and sensitive child with a sense of humor? Find instances of her courage, kind nature and humor in the text.
Answer: Yes, Jaya is a brave and sensitive girl. Despite being the same age of Velu she accepts her situation and learns to face it with happy face, Initially, she asks Velu to follow her and takes him safely through the traffic. This shows her courageous nature. She leads him behind the hall where there is a garbage bin and from it she offers him a squashy banana and vada. She eats only a banana this shows her kind heart. She calls him –hero and refers to a canal as Buckingham Canal, this trait of her shows how humorous she was.
3.) What one throws away as waste may be valuable to others. Do you find this sentence meaningful in the context of this story How?
Answer: ‘Children at work’ tells and gives an important lesson that what is not useful to one can be useful to other. The things like plastic, paper, metal sheets that are thrown away by the people are useful for the rag-pickers and hey sell it to a junk owner and then it is sold it to a factory. In this way, they get money and becomes a source of their livelihood.
