Working with the text

1.) (i) What was the Great Stone Face?

Answer:  The Great Stone Face was a work of nature, formed on the perpendicular side of a mountain by some immense rocks, which was formed in such a way that they resembled the features of a human face.

(ii) What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it?

Answer:  When Ernest gazed at the Great Stone Face he told his mother about his wish that if the stone could speak because it looks kind and its voice must be pleasant. He would love him very much.

2.) What was the story attributed to the Stone Face?

Answer:  Ernest’s mother told him story related to the Stone Face . When she was younger than little Ernest her mother told the story that in future a child would be born near who will be destined to become the greatest and noblest person of his time and whose face in manhood would have the same resemblance to the Great Stone Face.

3.) What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time?

Answer:  A man named Gathergold had left the native place many years ago and returned rich. He had striking resemeblance to the Great Stone Face. He thought to spend the rest of his life at his native place. His return made people believe that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time.

4.) (i) Did Ernest see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face?

Answer: No, Ernest didn’t find any likeness of the Stone Face in Gathergold . He thought that his face didn’t have the pleasant face of Great Stone Face.

(ii) Who did he confide in and how was he proved right?

Answer:  Ernest confided in the Great Stone Face. He considered him as his teacher. When Gathergold died he was left with no money which means he died in poverty and neglect.

5.) (i) What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man?

Answer: A man from the valley became commander and was known by the name of Blood-and-Thunder on the battlefield. When he returned to his native valley people around him started to believe that he had likeness of the Great Stone Face.

(ii) Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude?

Answer:  Once again Ernest didn’t find any similarity between Stone Face and General Blood-and –Thunder. His heart said that the man who would have the likeness of the Stone Face is yet to come.
