Answer: Since the desk had caught fire at Mrs. Macpherson’s home it was in a bad condition and of no use so it had been sold during the eve of Christmas .

 

3.) Why do Jim and Hans think that games or sports are good ways of resolving conflicts? Do you agree?

Answer: Jim and Hans got along very well at the game of football and there it can be seen that the surrounding is full of energy, happiness and excitement. This makes everyone forget their differences and resolve conflicts.

 

4.) Do you think the soldiers of the two armies are like each other, or different from each other? Find evidence from the story to support your answer.

Answer: Yes, the soldiers of the two armies are much like each other as they enjoy games and food together and even Hans and Jim agreed with each other in many terms. Every soldier wants to end the fight and go back home to see their loves ones and this is where one can say soldiers of two armies are similar.

 

5.) Mention the various ways in which the British and the German soldiers become friends and find things in common at Christmas.

Answer: The Germans and British soldiers got along very well at the Christmas eve. There they shared each other’s food and special drink and other delicacies. They enjoyed each other’s company and even played football. To back home and see their beloved’s happy faces is what common in every solider.

Answer: Jim’s return to his home would be Connie’s Christmas present. To see the face of the loved ones after many days is the best thing one can have so she thinks it is the best Christmas present in the world.

Answer: No other title can be best fitted than this for this story. For Connie the last letter of her husband was priceless like any other gift of the loved ones. So,the title is suitable for it.
