1.) Answer the following questions.
(a) What are the two types of deserts found in the world?
Answer
The desert areas are characterised by low rainfall, scanty vegetation and extreme temperatures. Depending on the temperatures there can be hot deserts or cold deserts.
Two types of deserts found are:
- Hot Desert- example- Sahara in Africa
- Cold Desert-example- Ladakh in India.
(b) In which continent is the Sahara desert located?
Answer
The world’s largest Desert is Sahara which is located in the continent of Africa and covering a large part of North Africa.
(c) What are the climatic conditions of the Ladakh desert?
Answer
Ladakh lying in the Great Himalayas, on the eastern side of Jammu and Kashmir of India is a cold Desert. Due to its high altitude, the climate is extremely cold and dry. The air is so thin that the heat of the sun can be felt intensely. The area experiences freezing winds and burning hot sunlight . The day temperatures in summer are just above zero degree and the night (–30°C). It is freezing cold in the winters the temperatures may remain below –40°C. The altitude in Ladakh varies from about 3000 m to 8000 m.
(d) What mainly attracts tourists to Ladakh?

The main attractions are
- To see the Buddhist monasteries and gompas.
- To trek in high altitude to see the meadows and glaciers.
- To see the important traditional ceremonies and festivities of Ladakh people.
(e) What type of clothes the people of the Sahara desert wear?
Answer
Groups of people living in the Sahara desert are nomadic tribes who depend on animals such as goats, sheep, camels and horses. These animals provide them with milk to eat, the skin of the animals is used to make leather for belts, slippers, water bottles; hair of the animals is used for mats, carpets, clothes and blankets.
(f) Name the trees that grow in Ladakh?
Answer
In Ladakh due to such extreme weather the common trees are willows and poplars but during the summers, fruit trees such as apples, apricots and walnuts bloom.
