(i) What are the four means of transport?
Answer
The four means of transport are;
- Railways- Cheapest mode of transport used to travel long distance in short time.
- Roads- Mode of transport especially used for short distances are roads
- Waterways- Cheapest Mode of transport used for carrying heavy goods over long distances.
- Airways- Fastest mode of transport and the costliest.
(ii) What do you understand by the term ‘settlement’?
Answer
Early human beings lived on trees and in caves and hunted for food but by time they started to grow crops it became necessary to have a permanent home. Settlements are places where people build their homes. The two types of settlement are:
- Permanent settlements in which people build houses to live for ever.
- Temporary settlements which are occupied for a short time.
(iii) Which are the activities practised by the rural people?

The activities of Rural people are
- Agriculture
- Fishing
- Crafts work
- Trading
- Forestry
(iv) Mention any two merits of railways.
Answer
The two merits of Railways are
- It’s the cheapest and fastest way of transport for Humans.
- Transporting of heavy goods over long distances quickly and cheaply.
(v) What do you understand by communication?
Answer
The process of exchanging of information to others through different ways like newspapers, radio and television we can communicate with a large number of people therefore called mass media and some modern fastest ways are email, telephone and etc. Communication are used to provide information, to educate as well as to entertain.
(vi) What is mass media?
Answer
Communication is the process of conveying messages to others. The newspapers, radio and television communicate with a large number of people at the same time . So they are called mass media.
