NCERT Solutions Class 7 Geography Chapter 5 – Water
1.) Answer the following questions.
(i) What is precipitation?
Answer
The water which evaporates cools down to form cloud which may then fall on the surface of Earth in the form of rain, this falling of water back onto the surface of the earth in the form of rain, snow is called precipitation.
(ii) What is water cycle?
Answer
The process by which water turns into vapour then into cloud and then it rain. The process by which water continually changes its form and circulates between oceans, atmosphere and land is known as the water cycle. Major process of water cycle are evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
(iii) What are the factors affecting the height of the waves?
Answer
The factors affecting the height of the waves are
- Speed of the wind
- Earthquake
- Volcanic eruptions
- Underwater landslides
(iv) Which factors affect the movement of ocean water?
Answer
The factors are
- By the gravitational pull of the sun an moon
- By the wind
- By the warm & cold currents
- By the temperature
(v) What are tides and how are they caused?
Answer
Tides are regular rise and fall of ocean water twice in a day. High tide when water rises to its highest level and low tide when water falls to its lowest level from the shore.
The cause of tides is due to the gravitational pull exerted by the sun and the moon on the earth’s surface.
(vi) What are ocean currents?
Answer
Flow of water flowing regularly on the ocean surface in definite directions is called ocean currents this currents are generally warm and cold. The warm ocean currents carry water from low latitudes (Equator) and move towards the Higher Latitude (poles) and the cold currents carry water from higher latitudes to lower latitudes.
3.) Tick the correct answer:
(i) The process by which water continually changes its form and circulates between oceans, atmosphere and land
(a) Water cycle (b) Tides (c) Ocean currents
Answer
(a) Water cycle
Explanation: It is because water cycle is the continuous process of water evaporating , cooling down and formingcloud which then falls as rainfall.
(ii) Generally the warm ocean currents originate near
(a) Poles (b) Equator (c) None of these
Answer
(b) Equator
Explanation: It is because temperature at the equator is warmer and temperature farther north is cold this effect the ocean currents to be warm or cold.
(iii) The rythmic rise and fall of ocean water twice in a day is called (a) Tide (b) Ocean current (c) Wave
Answer
(a) Tide
Explanation: The gravitational forces exerted on the earth by the moon and sun causes tide (rythmic rise and fall of ocean water).High tide when water rises to its highest level and low tide when water falls to its lowest level from the shore.
4.) Match the following:
Answer:
(i) Caspian Sea – (a) Largest lake
(ii) Tide – (b) Periodic rise and fall of water
(iii) Tsunami – (c) Strong seismic waves
(iv) Ocean currents – (d) Streams of water moving along definite paths
