1.) Read the following lines and answer the questions that follow.
Unlike other children, she could not use her hands in the usual way. While other small hands drew figures in the sand or plucked wild flowers, she wondered why she could not join them. She too wanted to hold a chalk in her hands and draw figures on a slate.

Ans. Ila could have felt very disheartened and incapable of performing simple tasks.

Ans. Ila learnt traditional art of Kathiawar from her mother and grandmother as they were skilled in the art form. They taught her to create many beautiful patterns using with their patterns. Ila herself was very determined and strong-willed to overcome her challenge and learn the craft. She did not give up even when she faced hardships in threading a needle. Ila’s younger siblings alas helped her and she learnt many styles.

Ans. The skill helped Ila to earn money regularly which brought an independence to her. The ‘new independence’ helped her to bring joy in her work she loved, a sense of contentment and satisfaction was experienced by her. Ila proved that all type of challenges can be overcome by hard work, positive thinking and tenacity.

Ans. The art of all form gives expression to our innermost beliefs and thoughts. One can display their ideas and thoughts with the help of their art which cannot be put forth through words always. The people with various handicaps can learn different art forms which can enhance their mental and physical skills and increase their self-confidence and self-respect.

Ans. We can be helpful and encouraging like Ila’s family and friends when someone faces challenges by supporting them. We can assist them in their endeavours to learn new things which can be physically and financially beneficial to them. We should inspire and encourage them when they face difficulties so that they do not become disheartened and stop everything. We must help them to join the mainstream of life along with others.
7.) How can Ila’s story help others to overcome challenges in their lives?
Ans. Ila’s story can help others to overcome challenges in their lives by inspiring them. Ila despite of her challenges never stopped from learning the art form from her parents and other new styles of stitching. She was unable to use her hands which did not stop her and she utilised her feet to make beautiful patterns. Thus, Ila’s life story is a great example of showing that every problem can be overcome through hard work, perseverance and positive mind.
